Why Joker Might Be Batmans Ally In The Snyder Cuts Knightmare Future

Jared Leto’s Joker will return in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and he could actually be Batman’s ally in the Knightmare future, but why? Originally not present in the Snyder Cut at all, Leto’s Joker was announced as being among the elements Zack Snyder would be adding into the movie during its additional photography this past fall. The Snyder Cut has taken many twists and turns on its long road to being released, but the addition of Leto’s Joker to the film was a bombshell even among many other bombshells.

Having debuted in Suicide Squad, Leto’s Joker appeared to almost certainly have been abandoned in Warner Bros. post-Justice League plans, making his return in the Snyder Cut that much more of a left turn since its announcement. How much he’ll be in the movie and what role he’ll have to play are now right up there with longer-standing questions about the Snyder Cut, but the nature of The Joker’s return could be hiding right out in the open. Despite being Batman’s arch-nemesis, The Joker could actually have a perfectly understandable (for him) reason to become his ally in the Snyder Cut.

Heroes and villains temporarily joining forces is a storytelling device that goes back ages, but Batman and The Joker’s enmity is such that it would obviously take a lot to convince them to team-up. However, an invasion from Apokolips and Darkseid’s efforts to bring the world under his control with the Anti-Life Equation would most certainly fall under “a lot” and then some. Here’s why The Joker might decide to align himself with Batman in the Snyder Cut.

The Justice League Has Been Decimated In The Knightmare

So far, the Knightmare sequence in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the brief snippet of it from the Snyder Cut trailer are all that’s been seen of the future after Darkseid’s invasion, but it’s shown enough for a few details about it to be clear. Aside from Darkseid having conquered Earth, the Justice League itself has been left in shambles, with Superman being brought over to the side of Apokolips through Darkseid’s use of the Anti-Life Equation. From the Snyder Cut trailer, the Hall of Justice also lies in ruins, while Wonder Woman’s broken shield and Aquaman’s trident suggest that they’ve both been killed. While there aren’t any details yet on the as yet unseen Green Lantern or Martian Manhunter (now known to have been disguised as General Swanwick), it also seems likely that they too have died in Knightmare.

That leaves Batman, Cyborg, and The Flash as the last standing members of the Justice League, with Batman seen leading the uprising against Darkseid in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and The Flash traveling back in time to warn Bruce of the invasion (his “too soon” arrival being the result of Barry going through the wrong “doorway” into the past, as revealed by Snyder). With the League left in tatters, it would naturally make sense for some unlikely alliances of heroes and villains to form against the greater threat posed by Darkseid. Enter The Clown Prince of Crime.

Joker Is (Likely) In The Knightmare

The new image of The Joker released by Snyder also revealed a somewhat blurred look at him, but one that was nevertheless clear enough to discern that his look will be fairly different from his appearance in Suicide Squad, notably with much longer hair, indicating a passage in time. Another image subsequently released by Snyder also shows Batman in his Knightmare trenchcoat, which Snyder confirmed was the product of the additional photography from October 2020, which is when Affleck and Leto were filming together. Moreover, the joker card seen in the first image is identical to the one seen in the Knightmare in the trailer. In other words, there’s plenty of good reason to expect to see The Joker appear in the Knightmare when the Snyder Cut arrives.

The Joker Might Be Immune To The Anti-Life Equation

Of course, an alien invasion impacts The Joker just as much as everyone else on Earth, especially when the nemesis launching the invasion is armed with a tool capable of stripping individuals of their free will in the form of the Anti-Life Equation. This is where Leto’s return in the Snyder Cut could really throw a curveball in the story. While the Anti-Life Equation is such a potent weapon that even a being as powerful as Superman can be brought under Darkseid’s control with it, The Joker himself might actually be impervious to it.

As for how that could be, The Joker isn’t like other people, or even other villains. The Joker lacks the same need for fulfillment or the capacity to experience heartbreak that others do (a la Superman’s “She was my world and you took her from me” line in Batman v Superman). As he put in it in the extended cut of Suicide Squad, “I am not someone who is loved. I’m an idea, a state of mind”. The likely demise of Harley Quinn in the Knightmare future has probably left Mr. J largely unfazed, and the sheer fact that he’s the world’s most monstrous sociopath could actually be the very thing that shields him from the effects of the Anti-Life Equation. Meanwhile, Darkseid’s use of it could also be what really makes The Joker opposed to him.

Why Joker Would Be Against Darkseid

Darkseid and The Joker may both be villains, but each is also the other’s fundamental opposite. Darkseid is a conqueror out of to rule all of existence, even explicitly stating as much on the Darkseid shirt released by Snyder through Ink to the People bearing the quote “All of existence shall be mine”. The Anti-Life Equation is his tool for subjugating his enemies and bringing all those he conquers to heel, and this puts him at odds with The Joker in a definitive way.

The Joker is a man who thrives in chaos and anarchy, and in some ways, a post-apocalyptic world might even be a dream come true for him as the ultimate paradise of the chaos he craves. Darkseid, on the other hand, brings about that cataclysm with the aim of using the Anti-Life Equation to lord over all mankind. Even setting aside Joker’s own possible ability to resist the Anti-Life Equation’s effects, Darkseid is establishing a new order that Joker simply wouldn’t be willing to abide, and voluntarily aligning himself with Apokolips would never even enter into his mind. Joker is, as the Heath Ledger incarnation in The Dark Knight once put it, “an agent of chaos”, something that Darkseid’s rule over Earth robs him of. This could be what leads him to join forces with Batman in the Knightmare with both determined the prevent this future, Batman having a vastly more heroic motivation, and Joker just wanting his old playground back after Darkseid has taken it away.

March 18th, 2021 will mark the day where the heavy push for the Snyder Cut by fans will finally pay-off with the movie’s HBO Max debut, but up until a few months ago, no one expected that it would involve an appearance by Jared Leto’s Joker, making the Snyder Cut, also now including more of Joe Manganiello’s Deathstroke, an even bigger deal than it already was. Where Joker fits into the story of Zack Snyder’s Justice League is surely going to be examined through a microscope from now until the movie’s release, and it could come down to the invasion by Apokolips leaving The Clown Prince of Crime without a world that he can unleash his own brand of chaos upon. With Batman also determined to undo the invasion before it happens, that could end up being what leads him and Joker to mutually conclude that, in the Knightmare future, the enemy of their enemy is their friend.
