Why Lucifer Didnt Tell Chloe [SPOILER] In Season 5

Warning: SPOILERS for Lucifer season 5.

In Lucifer season 5, what Chloe Decker (Lauren German) truly desires is to hear Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) say those three little words – so why can’t the Devil say “I love you”? Lucifer returned from Hell in season 5 after he learned his identical twin brother, the Archangel Michael, was posing as the Devil as part of a sordid revenge scheme. But Chloe quickly sensed something was off about Michael and the detective soon realized he was a doppelganger. After Lucifer returned to Chloe’s side, they finally became a romantic couple but, for some reason, the Devil can’t (or won’t) reciprocate Decker’s declaration of love.

Chloe heroically resisted Lucifer’s charms after they became partners in Lucifer season 1 and they had myriad ups-and-downs, even though they were mutually attracted. Pragmatic and self-assured, Decker was also always concerned for her young daughter Trixie (Scarlett Estevez), since Lucifer purported to be the Devil and was a terrible influence. But as the series continued, Lucifer and Chloe grew undeniably closer and she eventually discovered that he was, in fact, the Devil he said he was all along. Still, Chloe realized that she loved him and she told Lucifer so before he chose to return to Hell at the end of Lucifer season 4. While Lucifer was gone, Decker had to cope with the uncertainty of whether she would ever see him again, and the fact that her “I love you” was left hanging because he didn’t say it back.

So, why can’t Lucifer say those three little words that Chloe longs to hear? The fact that Lucifer is unfathomably narcissistic, as Dr. Linda Martin (Rachael Harris) has continually diagnosed the Devil, could be the simplest reason. Lucifer is not human; he’s a celestial being who has existed for millennia and, even among his fellow angels and demons, he’s incredibly self-absorbed. After all, Lucifer did lead a rebellion against Heaven and challenge the supremacy of God (Dennis Haysbert) himself. Lucifer has experienced a great deal of personal growth in the past few years but that’s a blip weighed against thousands of years of indulging in sin and encouraging the sordid desires of millions of humans. Thinking of others, even Chloe, above himself doesn’t come naturally or automatically to the Devil.

It’s worth noting that another potential reason Lucifer can’t say “I love you” is that, deep down, he may not be capable of actual love. It just may not be in his Devilish makeup to love someone other than himself. In fact, Lucifer once confessed to Linda during therapy that he hates himself, so how can the Devil love another if he can’t find a way to love himself? This could be the crux of Lucifer’s inability (or unwillingness) to say “I love you”, and it may be tied to the appearance of his Dad at the end of Lucifer season 5, part 1. Many strange things have happened to the Devil throughout Lucifer, like regaining the wings he once cut off, and how he seemed to lose and then regain his “mojo” to make people confess their deepest desires in Lucifer season 5. Lucifer not being able to tell Chloe he loves her is the latest hurdle, and possibly the most important.

Overall, God seems to have an inscrutable master plan for Lucifer and it apparently involves somehow making the Devil a better man. It’s possible that Lucifer actually saying “I love you” to the detective is a final test for him to overcome on his long, twisted road to becoming more than the Devil. The ability to say “I love you” (and genuinely feel and mean it) could be something Lucifer still has to earn, which is why it’s taking so long for him to utter the words.

Chloe herself is a God-given miracle; her very creation was a “gift” from God to Lucifer, and the detective spent much of Lucifer season 5, part 1 trying to reconcile what this means for her life if the divine reason for her very existence is to benefit the Devil. Still, Chloe is sure her feelings for Lucifer are real and she wants to be with him even if it is all by God’s design. For his part, Lucifer affection for the detective seems genuine. All Chloe desires is for Lucifer to say those three little words back to her but the Devil gets tongue-tied. Unfortunately, the way Lucifer season 5, part 1 ended, the detective still has a long, agonizing wait ahead of her – and so do Lucifer fans.
