Why Maya Hawke Cant Watch Her Mom Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction

Maya Hawke says that she has trouble watching her mother, Uma Thurman, in a particular scene of Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction. Hawke is, of course, the daughter of two very successful actors, Thurman and Ethan Hawke. This is not her only defining feature, though, as she has made quite a name for herself on her merit as an actor in the last few years.

While Maya Hawke’s career began in modeling, she quickly changed professions to acting when she made her screen debut in the 2017 adaptation of Little Women on BBC. Since then, she has made many screen appearances, most notably in the role of Robin in Stranger Things Season 3. She also has had minor roles in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and the Fear Street series on Netflix earlier this year. She is now starring in the film Mainstream, written and directed by Gia Coppola.

Speaking with The Guardian, Hawke was asked which of her parent’s films were her favorite. The actor stated that she hadn’t seen all of their movies, noting that it’s hard to watch her parents go through difficult emotional situations, even though she knows it’s pretend. She specifically cites the scene from Pulp Fiction where John Travolta’s character must administer an adrenaline shot to Uma Thurman’s heart as a challenging scene to watch. She stated that she would rather watch her mother sing and dance in 2005’s musical remake of The Producers. Her full reply is below:

It’s funny, I haven’t seen them all. Sometimes you don’t really want to watch your mom getting shot or your dad go through painful emotions, even though you know it’s pretend. So mostly I only watch the happy ones. One of my favorite movies of my mom’s is The Producers [Susan Stroman’s 2005 remake of Mel Brooks’s musical], where she’s dancing around being fabulous. That’s much more fun to see than John Travolta jamming a needle into her heart.

Despite her difficulty with watching Pulp Fiction, Hawke herself has, of course, worked with director Quentin Tarantino in his film, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. When the Guardian asked if she would work with him again, she said she would love to. Due to Tarantino’s working relationship with her mother, Hawke has known the director all her life.

While another collaboration between Hawke and Tarantino has yet to be announced, Hawke’s career is still in full swing. She is currently starring in the film Mainstream alongside Andrew Garfield. The film follows Hawke’s character as she follows a path to internet stardom. Next, the actor is expected to return as Robin in the fourth season of Stranger Things. While Hawke comes from an impressive parental background, she does not rely on this to bolster her career. Hawke is a successful and entertaining actor in her own right, and she may go on to star in films that will rival even the success of her parents. Perhaps, she can reteam with Tarantino for a Pulp Fiction prequel film wherein she plays a younger version of Uma’s Mia Wallace.
