Why Nick Fury Is So Much Older In Secret Invasion

While Marvel Studios has released a first look at Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury in their upcoming Secret Invasion series, why does the former SHIELD director look so much older? Revealed in a special feature for Disney+ Day along with a new logo, Secret Invasion will star Fury as he tackles a new threat of the shape-shifting alien race known as the Skrulls. However, something has happened to Fury where he now looks much older than his last appearance in the MCU.

Nick Fury was last seen in 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, recruiting Peter Parker to help him with an elemental threat from another universe that was eventually revealed to be a hoax put on by the villain Mysterio so he could play at being a hero. However, the end of the film reveals that Nick and Maria Hill were actually Skrulls working for the real Fury. Furthermore, the actual one-eyed superspy was revealed to be aboard a space station, confirming that he wasn’t even present on Earth at all. He’s also potentially recruiting agents for whatever initiative he’s begun in the cosmos (as seen in WandaVision when Monica Rambeau was recruited by a Skrull).

While not much is known about Secret Invasion other than it will be a loose adaption of the comics event of the same name, Nick Fury is revealed to be much older in the newly released footage. Not only has he forgone his traditional eye patch, but his beard is longer and grayer as well. While this could mean that Secret Invasion could feature some sort of significant time-jump forward into the MCU, taking the timeline several years beyond Fury’s last appearance, the presence of Skrulls could also play a factor where the true Nick Fury hasn’t been seen nearly as much as fans believe. Perhaps a Skrull has been posing as the former SHIELD director for far longer than just Far From Home?

Seemingly having a positive working relationship with Skrulls since the 1990s when Fury teamed up with Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel to protect them from the Kree, it’s possible that they’ve been involved with SHIELD and Fury’s efforts to protect the world since the very beginning of his time as director. However, considering that the comics’ Secret Invasion features Skrulls infiltrating the superhero community and several major organizations, it would certainly be a major twist if the MCU adaptation reveals that the real Nick Fury hasn’t been active on Earth for years with his face potentially being coopted by renegade Skrulls throughout multiple Marvel films.

With shapeshifters being involved, the possibilities and mysteries are quite vast. There could be several reasons why Nick Fury looks so much older (such as a time jump), though it seems more far more likely that it will have something to do with Skrulls posing as Fury, or perhaps a real and genuine version of Nick Fury fans have never seen before. Either way, MCU fans will just have to wait to get more definitive answers when Secret Invasion releases in 2022.
