Why Only One Bad Batch Clone Followed Order 66

Warning: SPOILERS for The Bad Batch series premiere.

In Star Wars: The Bad Batch, the commandos of Clone Force 99 refuse to follow Order 66 and eventually flee the Empire, except for one squad member: Crosshair. The premise of the animated series centers on the Bad Batch becoming fugitives of the newly-formed Galactic Empire. Crosshair, formerly the Bad Batch’s sniper, is tasked by the Empire to hunt down his former friends for their disobedience. Given that his squadmates all resisted their brainwashing, what made Crosshair different, and why was he unable to maintain his free will when Order 66 was activated?

The Republic clone troopers were officially an elite military force meant to fight alongside the Jedi in their war against the Separatist Alliance. In truth, the clones were one of the most vital components of the Sith conspiracy to wipe out the Jedi and convert the Republic into the authoritarian Empire. Despite their true purpose, the clones believed in democracy and exhibited free will, so naturally, Order 66 was enforced via brainwashing. As embryos, all clones received an implant that would change their personalities, corrupting them into cruel, unthinkingly obedient tools of the Sith and the Empire. Order 66 was ultimately a success, kickstarting the Jedi Purge and allowing the Empire to take power unopposed.

As shown in The Bad Batch episode 1, “Aftermath,” the Bad Batch was assisting Jedi and clone forces on Kaller when Order 66 was activated. The standard clones (“regs”) immediately succumbed to their control chips and killed Jedi Master Depa Billaba. When her padawan, Caleb Dume, fled his brainwashed friends, the Bad Batch was perplexed by the whole situation, refusing to kill the young Dume. Crosshair, on the other hand, pursued Dume and repeatedly tried to kill him – unsuccessfully. Upon returning to Kamino, Crosshair exhibited the same personality change that the regs did, supporting Palpatine’s fascist regime and unthinkingly adhering to any command, no matter how unethical they were. Tech explains that the squad’s mutations (and, in Echo’s case, cybernetic reconstruction) rendered them immune to their chips, but Crosshair’s modifications had little to no effect on his.

The original four members of the Bad Batch (and their secret fifth member, Omega) are fundamentally different from the rest of the Clone Army. The Kaminoans modified them in different ways to create clone super-soldiers, but these changes came with an unintended side effect of nullifying their control chips. Crosshair’s eyesight was modified to make him the best sniper in the Republic military, but this change may have been less invasive than the other commandos’ mutations, resulting in him being more susceptible to his implant. Despite this, the control chip’s impact on Crosshair wasn’t quite as strong as it was on the regular clones, so he may have been resisting it to a very limited degree. This was changed, however, when Tarkin ordered the Kaminoans to intensify his implant’s strength, completely suppressing Crosshair’s former self.

Now fully under the Empire’s control, Crosshair will be one of the Bad Batch’s deadliest adversaries. Not only is Crosshair a superhuman marksman, but he is also all too familiar with the tactics and behavior of his former squadmates, having been raised alongside them and serving with them during the Clone Wars. As shown in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, however, a Clone Trooper can have their control chip removed, restoring their free will and inevitably turning them against the Empire. Crosshair may have followed Order 66, but if his brethren somehow removed his chip, he’d become their ally once again, making for a fascinating new dynamic in Star Wars: The Bad Batch.
