Why The Kissing Booth 3 Hardly Has An Actual Kissing Booth

While it’s in the film’s title, The Kissing Booth 3 barely features an actual kissing booth. The booth itself is vital to the Netflix original film’s premise but slowly phases out over the course of the series. But the explanation for that aligns perfectly with the movie’s creative decisions, along with a few logistical points as well.

In the first Kissing Booth movie, the titular kissing booth acts as the catalyst for Elle (Joey King) and Noah’s (Jacob Elordi) relationship. Elle runs the kissing booth for her high school’s Spring Carnival, only to find herself kissing her crush and best friend’s brother, Noah. Elle lobbies to bring the kissing booth back for her senior year in The Kissing Booth 2. Once again, the booth serves as the setting for important moments in multiple characters’ relationships in the film.

The booth doesn’t make an appearance in The Kissing Booth 3 until its final scene for a few different reasons. The crux of the matter is that Elle has grown up, and the kissing booth represents a chapter of her life that has closed. That means that the booth’s presence in The Kissing Booth 3 was not really necessary.

As The Kissing Booth 2 ends with Elle and Lee’s high school graduation, the final movie in the trilogy focuses on life after high school. The kissing booth was a fundraiser that Elle was passionate about in high school, so there’s no reason she’d be involved as a graduate. The final scene in the movie sees Elle, Lee, and Noah visiting their high school’s carnival six years later as 24-year-old alumni. They’re pleasantly surprised to see that the current students are keeping up with the kissing booth that they started. It’s a nice nod to the series’ most important location in a way that feels appropriate to the main characters’ ages.

On a deeper note, the lack of the kissing booth also signifies the fact that Elle has matured in the third film. The kissing booth was the location of her very first kiss with her childhood crush, Noah. From the moment they get together, she lost herself in that relationship. If she’s not caught up with thoughts of Noah, it’s thoughts of Marco or Lee. After she decides to follow Noah to Harvard, The Kissing Booth 3’s climax points out that Elle never really lived for herself. So she makes the mature decision to instead attend the University of Southern California on her own to pursue her dream of video game design. The Kissing Booth 3 ends with Elle grown-up, single, successful, and happy. Getting one quick, final glimpse of the kissing booth simply proves how far she’s come.
