Wile E Coyote LiveAction Movie Recruits TMNT Out of the Shadows Director

Looney Tunes’ Wile E. Coyote movie, titled Coyote Vs. Acme, now has Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows director Dave Green signing on to lead the charge. Last year, it was reported that Warner Bros. was developing a film focused on the Wile E. Coyote character. As the title suggests, it will be a story set around Coyote and the fictional Acme Company, as the company itself ended up becoming a big rival for the character due to him purchasing traps from them to capture his nemesis, The Road Runner.

Wile E. Coyote vs. The Road Runner shorts in the 1940s and ‘50s are considered the golden age for the characters, with Looney Tunes director Chuck Jones shaping simple narratives under the guidance of the nine unbreakable rules for these two characters. Rules such as “The Road Runner cannot harm the Coyote except by going “Beep-Beep!” and “Whenever possible, make gravity the Coyote’s greatest enemy” were revealed in the autobiography, Chuck Amuck: The Life and Times of an Animated Cartoonist and they highlighted how incredibly simple, yet effective these shorts were. Now whether these rules continue to play a part in Warner Bros.’ live-action Wile E. Coyote movie remains to be seen, and figures such as LEGO Batman Movie director Chris McKay, who will be a producer, will likely have a say in this matter, as well as the new director.

According to a new report from Variety, director Dave Green has been brought aboard the Looney Tunes train by Warner Bros., helping develop the movie that will be a “live-action-animation-hybrid,” while ensuring the film is one step closer to becoming a reality. However, according to the report, despite securing Green as a director, the project is still in need of a writer.

Green most recently directed the 2016 movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, which was produced by Michael Bay and grossed over $245 million worldwide. The film also had Arrow star Stephen Amell, and despite winning over some members of the audience, ultimately disappointed with its final box office number. Green also directed the much smaller animated film, Earth to Echo.

Considering the tone of Green’s last directorial outing, as well as it being a live-action film, he seems to be an appropriate choice for Coyote Vs. Acme. Although, the fact these characters lack the range of the Turtles may prove to be a challenge for Green because he cannot rely on that type of wit and diversity in this film. However, it will be interesting to see how this, and Warner Bros.’ Space Jam 2 end up, and whether or not they will be able to provide that great dose of fun these famous Looney Tunes characters are known for.
