Wonder Woman 1984 Why Maxwell Lord Needed To Grant So Many Wishes

Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) never slowed down on granting wishes in Wonder Woman 1984, but why did he have to grant so many? His ability to magically give people whatever they wanted was Diana’s greatest obstacle in the DCEU movie. With this power, Lord nearly defeated Wonder Woman and came close to bringing the world to its knees.

The story of Wonder Woman 1984 was driven by the discovery of the Dreamstone, an ancient artifact that possessed mystical properties. Early in the movie, Diana (Gal Gadot) unknowingly drew on its power to bring Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) back to life, and Barbara (Kristen Wiig) used it to gain powers like Diana’s. Apparently, the Dreamstone has the capability to grant wishes, a fact which was understood by Max Lord, who wished to “become” the Dreamstone. In making this wish, Lord gained the power to grant these wishes himself. After acquiring the Dreamstone’s powers, Max Lord unleashed chaos on the planet by seeking people out and convincing them to tell him their deepest wishes.

Lord’s reasons for using his power is linked to how the Dreamstone works. One doesn’t ask for something from the Dreamstone without giving something in return. For instance, Diana didn’t know that the cost of her wish for Steve Trevor to be alive again was her powers. Because of this rule and how the magic worked, Lord was always quick to make demands of those he granted wishes to, and these people had no power to stop him from getting what he wanted. This was demonstrated when Max took Black Gold from Simon Stagg (Oliver Cotton). He repeated this method in numerous other conversations as well.

Some may wonder why Max Lord went as far as he did. Lord felt that he needed to grant wishes in order to acquire resources that he could use to become the most powerful person on the planet. But, Lord had already gained a great deal prior to utilizing President Reagan’s Star Wars program. That being said, that didn’t stop him from trying to reach everyone in the world. It would seem that Lord’s efforts can be blamed on his ambitions. As Lord explained, he was a person who feared failure, so gaining power was his ultimate goal. Having the means to increase his influence appeared to be too much for him, as it caused him to abuse his abilities. Lord became so obsessed with granting wishes that he began using his powers like an addict.

As previously noted, it wasn’t necessary for Lord’s plan for him to grant so many wishes, but his ambitions and addiction to the Dreamstone powers made him blind to the consequences. Not knowing when to stop, he didn’t seem to notice (or care) about the deteriorating effect it was having on his body. Only when his son was put in peril at the end of Wonder Woman 1984 did Max Lord finally realize the error of his ways.
