Will Samsungs Rumored Exynos 2200 Challenge Apples M1 Chip

Samsung is said to be working on its next-generation mobile chip, the Exynos 2200 to compete with Apple’s M1. The rumors suggest Samsung’s upcoming processor may be designed to provide high enough levels of performance to power laptop computers, possibly bringing a challenge to Apple’s new Mac computers and iPad Pro. Samsung’s Exynos is used in some of its smartphones and tablets but has yet to make its way into a laptop.

The Exynos processor has often lagged in performance when compared with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon chip. Samsung typically chooses Qualcomm’s silicon for smartphones that are manufactured for the United States, but uses its own flagship Exynos in the international versions. While the speed difference brought complaints from some customers in the past, the latest Exynos 2100 can stand toe-to-toe with the Snapdragon 888, with both chips having a similar configuration and manufactured using a 5-nanometer process.

Unnamed industry sources shared that Samsung is working on a new Exynos system-on-a-chip that can be used in both smartphones and laptop computers, according to Korean Economic Daily. Samsung typically relies upon Intel CPUs for its laptop computers and convertibles, such as the new Galaxy Book 360. However, its Galaxy Book S uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8cx processor, a stronger version of the chips used in mobile phones, which means that it is sufficiently powerful to handle a basic Windows laptop while providing outstanding battery life. While Qualcomm’s 8cx doesn’t offer the performance of Intel CPUs yet, it has been making gains. If the Exynos 2200 can compete with the third-generation 8cx, it will represent a big leap in performance for Samsung’s silicon.

Samsung’s 2200 Vs. Apple’s M1

Last year, Samsung stated that it was partnering with AMD to include advanced graphics technology in its processors. This means the Exynos 2200 will likely see big gains in graphics performance, something that is important for laptop computers which potentially have higher resolution displays than phones and are generally expected to handle video editing, image processing and graphically demanding games with greater ease. AMD’s current generation of Radeon discrete graphics cards overpower the integrated graphics of Apple’s M1. Integrating AMD’s graphics technology into the same chip as the main processor has trade-offs, potentially speeding communication between components, but also expanding the size of the chip and drawing more power. Therefore, there is a balancing act required, particularly if the Exynos 2200 will eventually appear in a Samsung phone, such as the Galaxy S22.

Assuming Samsung allows enough room and power to enjoy the increased performance possible with AMD’s GPU, it might outperform Apple’s M1 in graphics-heavy tasks. There is more to a laptop than GPU speed, however, and the M1 processor has a big lead in single-core speed over the previous Exynos 2100, outperforming even Intel’s laptop class CPUs. Samsung doesn’t necessarily need to win a speed challenge, though. If its new processor can perform well enough while providing a long battery life and do so at a more affordable price, there will be a place for an Exynos 2200-based laptop. Since it would most likely run Windows, plenty of businesses and consumers still have a need for software specific to that platform. Samsung’s Exynos 2200 will be a processor to keep an eye on as it could have a big impact on the laptop market, even if it doesn’t challenge Apple’s M1.
