Wolverine vs Death Note Would Writing Logans Name Kill Him For Good

Wolverine, debatably the most recognizable member of the X-Men since the team’s creation, is well known for being unkillable due his magnificent healing factor, but would his powers hold up against the mystical powers of the Death Note? The supernatural book from the titular manga was penned by the gods of death and is capable of many things, so it could be possible. The best way to know for sure is to compare the rules of the Death Note and the many times Logan has met his end in the comics.

Despite his ability, Wolverine has died a multitude of times over the years. In fact, he’s about to die for the second time in eight years. In 2014’s Death of Wolverine, Logan was encased in Adamantium, the same material his bones are covered in, and was suffocated to death. Alternatively, Logan’s been killed various times by disintegration, but only if every cell is destroyed leaving him nothing to regenerate from. While these deaths have been reversed, his death from suffocation was permanent for quite some time. It’s probable that he could be killed again this way, though only if it’s in accordance with the Death Note’s rules.

Firstly, whoever is using the Death Note would have to know Logan’s full name. Secondly, the Death Note states “This note will not take effect unless the writer has the person’s face in their mind when writing his/her name.” So whoever is using it to kill Logan would’ve had to have seen him before — which is easy enough assuming it would be one of his villains. Thirdly, the details of the death have to be written within 6 minutes and 40 seconds or the person will die of a heart attack, which obviously wouldn’t kill Wolverine. The writer would have to be precise about the suffocation or disintegration, making sure to specify that all air gets cut off and no cells are left alive.

Assuming that all these rules are followed, the Death Note could still not kill Wolverine for one rule and one rule only. One the lesser known rules of notebook, shown only in the rule pages in between chapters, clearly states, “You cannot kill humans at the age of 124 and over with the DEATH NOTE.” Now while there is some debate as to how old Wolverine is, its widely accepted that he is somewhere between 130-200 years old. This puts him over the maximum age that the Death Note can kill. No matter how hard anyone tries, that’s a rule that would be impossible to work around.

When looking at the base rules of the Death Note it’s completely conceivable that it could be used to kill Wolverine. However, after reading all the specific, almost arbitrary rules, it’s impossible. Wolverine’s healing factor can help him recover from almost anything, but it turns out that his abilities aren’t even what saves him from the Death Note, it’s the rules of the notebook itself.
