Wolverine vs Juggernaut Who’d Win a Comics Battle

While Wolverine and Juggernaut are two of the most durable heroes in Marvel Comics, they’re also rivals who have clashed many times. Both are extremely resistant to damage and have an insane healing factor, however, both can also die in extreme circumstances. Without the X-Men watching his back, could Logan triumph, or is it true that nothing can stop the Juggernaut?

Wolverine is famous for his adamantium-coated bones and retractable claws, but also boasts superhuman senses and a rapid healing factor that can fix extensive damage done to his body thanks to his mutant X-gene. Though often mistaken for a mutant, Juggernaut’s powers actually come from the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak – a demon lord who feeds on the destruction caused by his earthly avatar. Juggernaut boasts enhanced strength and durability, as well as regenerating armor that protects him from psychic attack, but his chief power is his ‘magic’ momentum, which means that once he is moving at sufficient speed, he’s impossible to stop outright (though heroes have triumphed by removing the ground under him, such as when Spider-Man tricked Juggernaut into walking onto wet concrete.)

The pair’s first match-up happened in Uncanny X-Men Vol 1 #102, by Chris Claremont and Dave Cockrum. The cover flashes the catchphrase, “Who shall stop the Juggernaut?” In the end, Storm comes to the rescue, and the X-Men barely make it out with their lives. However, before her arrival, the villain pulverizes Wolverine, Colossus, and Nightcrawler in a three-on-one battle. Wolverine taunts the giant and refuses to back down, but every swipe of his claws simply bounces off with a shimmer of sparks. Other run-ins with the X-Men usually see Juggernaut stopped by Jean Gray or Professor X, who use telepathy to bring the monster down.

This run-in between Wolverine and Juggernaut did not go well for the heroic mutant. He was useless in the fight and had to be saved from the villain. Only a faceful of hot coals from Nightcrawler saved Wolverine from further injury and humiliation. Should the circumstances be equalized in a one-on-one fight, Juggernaut would only have more of an advantage. Although Juggernaut does have a few minor vulnerabilities, such as magic and telepathy, the Wolverine is simply not equipped to exploit those weaknesses. On one occasion, Shatterstar was able to exploit the small openings in his helmet and stab Juggernaut in the eyes, however he healed seconds later, with no lasting effects. This leaves Logan with no real options to penetrate the Juggernaut’s defenses and no real way of avoiding total defeat.

Wolverine does have an incredible healing factor and an indestructible skeleton that would help him endure a beating from his opponent, but one of the Juggernaut’s abilities is the immunity to fatigue. The Juggernaut has no specific ability that would allow him to kill Wolverine outright, but he still has lots of options. Total incineration has been shown to kill Wolverine as recently as Inferno #1 (and as far back as Uncanny X-Men #142), and drowning has killed characters of a similar power set (such as Logan’s son Daken.) Ultimately, Juggernaut is overwhelmingly stronger than Wolverine and more immediately durable, meaning that having beaten Logan to a pulp, he’d be able to simply hold him underwater for a permanent victory.

Sealing the deal is the fact that Juggernaut’s powers aren’t static. Colossus’ time as the wielder of the Crimson Gem proved that Cyttorak is willing to lend its avatar further power when they’re causing enough destruction, allowing them Hulk-level strength and incredible healing powers. There’s an outside chance that Wolverine could trick Juggernaut into a trap, but ever since his defeat against Spider-Man, the villain (and recent antihero) has been a lot more wary of unstable ground, and Logan would need to work overtime just to negate his momentum before even moving on to causing him harm. Wolverine is outmatched by the Juggernaut, and while there’s always a way for underdogs to win in Marvel Comics, Cyttorak’s avatar would claim victory in any fair fight.
