Woody Allen Releases Trailer For A Rainy Day In New York

Woody Allen released the trailer for A Rainy Day in New York. After his first experience writing a feature film with 1965’s What’s New Pussycat turned out to be the exact opposite of what he was aiming for, comedian Woody Allen decided that never again would he allow others to be in control of his creative pursuits.

What followed as a result has been one of the most prolific outputs in cinematic history, with Allen releasing a film a year since 1977’s Oscar-winning Annie Hall. In the last few years, however, Allen’s undeniable talents have been underscored by claims of past sexual misconduct against his then 7-year-old adopted daughter, Dylan. Though Allen has always denied these claims, they have weighed heavily on his public persona and filmmaking career, with Amazon Studios having canceled the release of Allen’s most recent film, A Rainy Day in New York, due to the 83-year-old’s suggestion that he should be the poster boy for the #MeToo movement, given what he referred to as a spotless track record of conduct with actresses over the years.

However, despite the problems that Allen has faced over the release of A Rainy Day in New York, the film’s first official trailer has just been released, courtesy of Allen’s Facebook page. The film marks the follow up to 2017’s Wonder Wheel and, as is typically the case with a Woody Allen film, has an impressive cast that includes Elle Fanning, Jude Law, Selena Gomez, Diego Luna, Timothée Chalamet, and Suki Waterhouse. A Rainy Day in New York sees Allen once again return to his beloved New York City in order to tell the story of a young couple who finds themselves taking on a host of different adventures when they head to New York for the weekend. The romantic comedy had originally been slated for a 2018 release, but was shelved by Amazon after Allen’s aforementioned comments and alleged misconduct. In light of this decision, as well as the decision to cancel Allen’s remaining four-film contract, the iconic director launched a $68 million lawsuit, claiming that his film and contract were dropped as the result of “a 25-year-old, baseless accusation.” As the situation currently stands, A Rainy Day in New York will be released in Europe and South America in the fall of 2019. There is presently no information regarding a US release.

While the accusations against Allen are very serious indeed, there are many complicated layers to the situation. Moses, the brother of Dylan Farrow, repeatedly asserted that their mother, Mia Farrow, was abusive toward them and brainwashed the children about Allen after her highly publicized breakup with the filmmaker. Regardless of whether or not this is true, it’s yet another point of view to consider in this ongoing, complicated issue. It’s impossible to say whether or not Allen is guilty of what he’s been accused of, but for now, some fans will still get to see his latest work.
