Of all the filler arcs that the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime had, the Grand Championship arc was certainly one of the better ones. Here are how its duels stack up.

Of all the filler arcs that the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime had, the Grand Championship arc was certainly one of the better ones. It was light and easy, only taking up 14 episodes, and was just a nice little tournament after the saga that was Waking the Dragons. There were plenty of fun duels to watch throughout this arc.

While there are some fun duels like Vivian and Rebecca, there are also massive feuds coming to a head such as Kaiba Vs. Zigfried. This arc has them all, and some certainly rise above the rest in terms of quality.

9 Yugi Vs. DuelTek 760

The first duel of the season is Yugi taking on the DuelTek 760 that was hacked by Zigfried. The only issue is that he isn’t using his deck, but rather one that belonged to a kid named Luke, who had a deck that only had one spell card in it.

The rest were all monster cards. Yugi is forced to use that card in order to unlock the power in Luke’s deck, but it is a close match that Yugi could have lost had it gone one turn longer.

8 Joey Vs. Grandpa

Joey Vs. Grandpa is a fun duel that sort of plays out like a puzzle. Throughout the duel, Solomon is slowly playing pieces of his Ancient Dragon, which, once summoned, wreaks havoc across the field.

Joey must figure out a way to combat this dragon while remembering all of the tricks that Solomon taught him when he started dueling. In the end, the student beats the teacher after quite a solid back and forth.

7 Vivian Vs. Rebecca

Rebecca Vs. Vivian is a fun one because the two absolutely hate each other due to their mutual love for Yugi. Of course, a rivalry between these two was set in stone.

Dragon Lady, Vivian’s signature card, causes Rebecca quite a bit of trouble. However, Rebecca’s Gravity Bind & Fire Princess combo, along with a little help from Guardian Angel Joan, helps her slowly burn Vivian’s life points down to zero. However, this isn’t the last we’ll see of Vivian…

6 Zigfried Vs. Weevil And Rex

This duel is astonishing because in the first turn of their duel (during a tournament that they weren’t even invited to) Weevil and Rex manage to both summon the most powerful monsters in their deck, and they’re a tag team, meaning Zigfried has to figure out how to defeat them both.

Using Ride of the Valkyries, he defeats them in one single move in an absolutely astonishing fashion. The duel is quick, but the drama that it brings to the field? Incredible.

5 Rebecca Vs. Leon

Rebecca Vs. Leon is one of the later duels in the tournament, and the two certainly give each other a run for their money. Rebecca’s dragons are more prominently featured during this duel as opposed to her Gravity Bind shutdown, and while they almost win her the duel, Leon’s fairy tales are too strong, and they take Rebecca out of the tournament.

Still, with all the back and forth, you’re never sure who will win.

4 Yugi Vs. Vivian

Yugi Vs. Vivian is a duel that only happens because Vivian forced Yugi to duel by kidnapping his grandpa, and while Vivian quickly gets the upper hand by summoning her Dragon Lady, she has no idea what she’s in for with Yugi’s next combo.

Yugi summons Skilled Dark Magician to bring it to the field, and the cards activated for its effect get Buster Blader into his hand. And then, he fuses them to summon Dark Paladin, and as Vivian’s graveyard is filled with dragons, the monster absolutely obliterates her in the most powerful way possible. It’s a sight, truly.

3 Joey Vs. Zigfried

Joey Vs. Zigfried is quite the saga of a duel. While Zigfried consistently has the upper hand on Joey, it’s never a huge lead. Joey is always right behind him, and he has an array of spells and traps that keep him tipping over the edge of defeat. However, in the end, it all comes down to luck, and if Joey can pick the correct card out of three randomly, he’ll be safe.

Unfortunately, he picks the wrong one and loses. Despite this, the duel is full of huge come-from-behinds and is set against a volcano set-piece, which certainly amps it up.

2 Yugi Vs. Leon

The championship match of the tournament, Yugi Vs. Leon, is quite the event. As Zigfried tricks Leon into using the hacked illegal card Golden Castle of Stromberg, all seems lost as the card has been filled with broken effects.

However, Yugi is able to turn the duel around as he cannot pay the cost of the card (throwing away half of his own deck, not Leon’s) because he only has one left. And then, you guessed it, Yugi defeats Leon with one card. It doesn’t get much better than that. But, there is one duel that’s better.

1 Zigfried Vs. Kaiba

Zigfried Vs. Kaiba is easily the best duel of the arc. It is a bitter-fought battle between two rivals who clearly hate each other. Every turn could be the end for each duelist, especially Kaiba.

Zigfried’s Valkyries and Goddesses almost overpower Kaiba, but in true Kaiba fashion, he summons five different dragons onto the field at once, including Chaos Emperor Dragon, and smashes Zigfried into the ground, proving that he is one of the best duelists of all time.
