Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 Leaked Names Every Fake One So Far

Ever since Nintendo announced its sequel to 2017’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, several titles for the upcoming RPG have been leaked; however so far none have gone on to show even a glimmer of accuracy. Nintendo first announced that a sequel to Breath of the Wild was in development all the way back in 2019 at an E3 Nintendo Direct presentation. During this presentation, fans were treated to a dark and mysterious trailer that showed Link and Princess Zelda as they travelled through a murky underground dungeon to the corpse of Ganondorf. The corpse soon reanimates itself and grabs the Hero of Time as waves of ghostly light are emitted all around them.

Since that particular Breath of the Wild 2 announcement, fans have heard no more about it from Nintendo. Instead, Nintendo revealed Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity out of the blue in September 2020, with the Dynasty Warriors-spin off releasing shortly after in November. The news of Age of Calamity made it the first time in the Zelda franchise’s history that both a prequel and sequel for one game were in production at the same time. While Age of Calamity can not be treated as a true prequel to Breath of the Wild, given that the events that transpire do not match up with the Breath of the Wild canon, it does give players the chance to experience a pre-calamity Breath of the Wild map, as well as providing more background on the four Hylian champions.

Despite this recent focus on the prequel, and notable lack of any more news from Nintendo about The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2, there have been many apparent leaks and reports from “Nintendo insiders,” surrounding the name of the future Zelda game. Many of these posts have gone on to be deleted, but not before fans have managed to read them and break down what these rumored titles could mean for the franchise’s future.

BOTW2 Name Leak – Legend of Zelda: Bond of the Triforce

Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 Leaked Names Every Fake One So Far

This title was first noticed on 4chan before being shared on Reddit. Both posts have since been removed and the leak no longer exists. This lack of validity however has not stopped fans, such as HMK, from picking apart what a Zelda game named Bond of the Triforce could mean. The name certainly draws on the concept that Link, Ganon and Princess Zelda will once more come face to face, perhaps in a showdown similar to that from The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. In the final battle of this Zelda game from 2002, Ganon readies his sword before turning on Link and proclaiming that it is time to “Put an end to that which binds us together,” referring to the Triforce of courage, wisdom, and power.

BOTW2 Name Leak – Legend of Zelda: Breath of Evil

Again, this title originated on 4chan, and went on to be shared on Twitter. Also again, these so-called leaks have been removed from both sites. Even before these posts were deleted, however, the title of Breath of Evil was widely disparaged by the Zelda community. It was (rightfully) reasoned that this title sounded more like that of poor fan-fiction rather than that of a follow on to arguably the best Legend of Zelda game to date.

BOTW2 Name Leak – Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Darkness

Another 4chan leak that has since been removed, but not before it was screenshotted by Inverse. Back in October 2019, Breath of the Darkness was “announced” by someone who claimed to have contacts within Nintendo.

This leak went beyond just giving the Breath of the Wild sequel a name, but also went on to claim that 10 minutes of gameplay had been shown, which included Zelda and Link fighting a Dark Guardian. This leak also claimed that the next game in the Zelda series will be part of Nintendo’s fabled Switch 2 launch.

BOTW2 Name Leak – Legend of Zelda: Dark Tombs

This title first leaked in March 2020 again on, yep, 4chan. No surprises here, it has also since been removed. Inverse originally reported on this 4chan rumor, with the impression that the dark tombs mentioned in the title could be part of an underground map, which would expand upon Breath of the Wild’s original overworld map.

BOTW2 Name Leak – Legend of Zelda: Echoes of the Past

This is one of the more recently rumored titles for the BOTW. Revealed alongside a series of other Nintendo announcements in a document for “Internal use only,” this leak alluded to a Nintendo Direct happening on January 11th. As that date has since passed, it is safe to assume that the next Zelda game is not Echoes of the Past. Other so-called leaks on the same document also did not come to fruition.

BOTW2 Name Leak – Legend of Zelda: Shadows of the Lost

The most recent title to be teased for Zelda fans, this apparent leak was only revealed last Friday, once again on 4chan. Once again, it is now an archived feed. Game Rant, however, did capture a screen grab of the leak, which included a title logo for Shadows of the Lost. This leak also announced that a Nintendo Direct will happening this February, with the Breath of the Wild sequel slated for release in October 2021.

As with all leaks, speculations and rumors surrounding the Breath of the Wild sequel, everything must be taken with a pinch (or maybe even a fistful) of salt until something is officially announced by Nintendo itself. This year does mark the 35th Anniversary of the Legend of Zelda series, so hopefully some new information will come to light soon about how Nintendo plans to celebrate this momentous occasion.

Last year was the 35th Anniversary of the Super Mario franchise, which was acknowledged with the rerelease of several older Mario titles. Perhaps fans will finally get that Ocarina of Time remaster for the Switch, or perhaps, just perhaps, Nintendo will surprise everyone with its eventual release of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 (name still pending…).
