Like numerous iconic Marvel characters, Adam Warlock made his debut alongside the Fantastic Four in Fantastic Four #67. In the story, readers saw the origin of Adam Warlock, who, at the time, was known simply as “Him” or “He.” After emerging from an artificial cocoon created by a group of scientists called The Enclave, “Him” immediately recognized his creators had evil intent, which caused Him to rebel. In 1972, 5 years after his debut appearance, Warlock was given his solo arc in the first two issues of Marvel Premiere Volume 1. After being reborn by a god-like being named the High Evolutionary, Warlock, still going by “Him” at the time, watched from an enclosed area as the High Evolutionary created what he called Counter-Earth, a planet made to defy all the previous flaws of humanity.

After the High Evolutionary is attacked by Man-Beast, who quickly fled to Counter-Earth, “Him” offers to chase after Man-Beast and kill him. After the High Evolutionary reluctantly agrees, he leaves for Counter-Earth, officially naming himself “Warlock.”

From 1972 to 1976, a year after his first solo arc, Warlock was the main character for his own self-titled solo series. In the series, Warlock is working to bring good to Counter-Earth to stop the High Evolutionary from destroying it, ending his experiment with the alternate pathway of Counter-Earth’s human population. In the four-year run of the title, fans saw Adam Warlock face off against villains like Thanos, Magus, and Brute; Counter-Earth’s Reed Richards.

As previously mentioned, Adam Warlock played a critical role in one of Marvel’s most significant comic events ever: Infinity Gauntlet. After Thanos’ rebirth in Silver Surfer Rebirth Of Thanos, he immediately began his quest to gather all five Infinity Gems to take control of time and space and balance out the world’s population to satisfy Lady Death, who he met in the after-life.

After establishing a rivalry with Thanos in his solo run, Warlock was one of the few people capable of defeating Thanos, as he was not only powerful enough, but he understood Thanos’ mind as well as anyone in Marvel. In one of the most iconic panels ever drawn in comics, Adam Warlock wielded the Infinity Gauntlet and declared an end to the conflict.

Warlock leads heroes like Reed Richards, Daredevil, Spider-Man, and much more alongside supervillains like Kang, Thanos, Galactus, and Doctor Doom in this massive team-up event. To this day, this is still the largest team of characters ever assembled in Marvel history.

Immediately following the events of Infinity War, Adam Warlock was given a 42-issue solo series called Warlock and the Infinity Watch. In the first issue of the series, Warlock is on trial as Eternity, the god of existence, claims Warlock is unfit to wield the Infinity Gauntlet as it’s simply too dangerous for one being to control all five gems of reality. As a result, Warlock agrees to divide up the five gems amongst a team he calls the Infinity Watch.

The entire team made their debut in issue 2 of the series with Drax holding the Power Gem, Moondragon having the Mind Gem, Pip holding the Space Gem, Gamora holding the Time Gem, and Warlock himself holding the Soul Gem.

In 2008, at the beginning of the 2nd volume of Guardians Of The Galaxy, Adam Warlock became an official member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, fighting extra-dimensional threats alongside Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Gamora, Groot, and a few other newcomers. Considering this is the Guardians of the Galaxy book that first saw Warlock become a team member, it’s not a stretch to say that James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy 3 film could likely adapt some of its elements onto the big screen. In 2004, almost forty years after the debut of Warlock as “Him,” the Enclave used artist Janie Chin to create a new version of Adam Warlock in an artificial reality. The new Warlock saves humanity in this fake reality and forms a dictatorship. The storyline is very complex, constantly challenging the reader to consider the validity of the words the narrator is telling them, as plot twists and identity reveals are regular occurrences. Later in the storyline, to distinguish this Warlock version from the original, the new Warlock is named Warlock Delta.

1 Adam Warlock And The Silver Surfer Became A Dynamic Duo

With seventeen appearances in Silver Surfer Volume 3 and their subplot in Infinity Gauntlet, Adam Warlock and the Silver Surfer have become one of the most potent duos that Marvel comics have ever seen. Silver Surfer Vol 3 saw lots of conflicts revolving around Thanos, Warlock, and Galactus in the build-up to the Infinity Gauntlet event. Like in Silver Surfer Vol 3 #48, when Silver Surfer confronts Galactus about his soul not appearing to be perfectly intact under the advice of Adam Warlock. Because of Warlock’s advice, Galactus restored Surfer’s memories of all the previous worlds he had destroyed. Shortly after this moment, Galactus confronted Thanos for the first time, warning him not to do anything that would disturb the life of Galactus.
