10 Sosuke Sogura and Kaname Chidori

Sosuke and Chidori, the main protagonists of Full Metal Panic, are perhaps the strangest couple when viewed in a real-world light. A teen soldier who grew up on the battlefield and thus has very little understanding of everyday life and a headstrong and, often, decidedly violent high school student makes for a fun combination. Most people would probably be pretty taken aback if a guy pulled a gun on an arcade game only to be pummeled into the ground by the girl that’s with him. Yet the oddity of their relationship is what makes them shine! Chidori has the patience and unique tastes to see the value in Sosuke as a partner, and Sosuke’s devotion and trust for her drives him to do the impossible. This is a romance that grows deeper and deeper as danger is afoot, and Kaname always has danger stalking her.

9 Mikoto Misaka and Kamijo Touma

This may be one of the most frustrating romances in anime history, but it’s also sweet. Mikoto Misaka and Kamijou Touma are the main protagonists of A Certain Scientific Railgun and A Certain Magical Index. Whether it’s Kamijou helping Misaka defeat Accelerator without being asked or Misaka sticking her nose in to take on an entire army of armed bad guys as Komijou races to save his angel friend, these two characters continually provide their full support to each other no matter the danger.

They are literally made for each other as they both have a heart of gold and can never resist meddling in a situation where they can help. Yet, Koumijo is a wool-brained fool and any fan of A Certain Magical Index will agree that he is completely oblivious to the love that Misaka holds for him, but that just makes this romance even more tantalizing to fans.

8 Milly Thompson and Nicholas D. Wolfwood

Milly Thomspon and Nicholas D. Wolfwood are two major characters in the anime Trigun and their love story is ageless. Wolfwood is a man broken by the weight of difficult decisions. He was trained from a young age to kill and this training along with the life he’s lived has left his heart of gold scarred with realism and pessimism. Yet Wolfwood finds hope again through his friendship with Vash the Stampede and a kind-hearted woman named Milly Thompson.

After a touching scene where the couple gives in to their feelings for each other, tragedy strikes, and Wolfwood, his morality and character reclaimed, sacrifices himself to save Milly among others in one of the most moving scenes of any anime.

7 Lelouch Vi Britannia and CC

Lelouch, the main protagonist of Code Geass, has had many women in his life throughout the series and each woman and romance holds its own special place in fan’s hearts, yet one of these relationships stands above them all. CC, the immortal witch who grants Lelouch his Geass, is side by side with Lelouche through it all. She shares his pain, his sins, and his secrets. She is the one woman who knows every part of Lelouch’s journey and supports him throughout the anime, even when her greatest desire is dangled before her. This makes Lelouch and CC’s relationship one of the most potent and intimate in anime history.

Trust and devotion is epitomized in the relationship between Sword Art Online’s main protagonists, Asana and Kirito, and this love grows even deeper as the anime continues. Whether it’s Asana throwing herself in front of Heathcliff’s final blow to protect Kirito, Kirito killing men in-game and IRL to protect Asana, or Asana trapping her soul in a virtual world so Kirito isn’t alone for thousands of years, these two heroes continuously find ways to bring fans to tears with the depth of their devotion thus making this romance one of the absolute best romances in anime history.

Taiju and Yuzuriha are two major characters in the anime Dr. Stone and their love is ageless. At the beginning of the anime, Taiju has been in love with Yuzuriha for five years and he is finally about to confess his feelings to her when a green flash petrifies the entire human race. Though petrified, Taiju is still conscious and he maintains his consciousness for 3715 years. Taiju is one of only two characters in the anime so far that was capable of this feat, and he accomplishes this by focusing on one thing, telling Yuzuriha how he feels. The devotion and willpower Taiju shows brings a sense of passion to Dr. Stone and makes their relationship one of the most compelling of any anime out there.

4 Edward Elric and Winry Rockbell

Fan’s of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood will tell you that the best and greatest change from the original anime lies in the relationship between Winry and Edward, and it’s easy to understand why. The romance begins one-sided with Ed’s boyhood crush on Winry, yet, as the anime progresses, fans see Winry slowly understand and accept that she too has feelings for Edward. This masterfully built relationship, never coming to fruition until the very final scene of the anime, literally drives fans crazy as they continuously hold onto hope that, this time, the love between Winry and Edward might actually work out.

3 Maka Albarn and Soul Eater Evans

This romance really isn’t much of a romance, but that’s what makes the love between Maka and Soul so unique in the world of anime. These two protagonists from Soul Eater have a relationship built around understanding. Due to the nature of soul resonance, a greater understanding of their partner’s inner self actually gains them greater fighting power. Thus, in the anime, we often see Maka and Soul working through common relationship problems. This realistic take on a relationship conceptualized into fighting strength is powerful, yet, as the two literally dive into each other’s souls, they form an unbreakable bond centered around the understanding they form and a need to protect each other by trusting one another.

2 Yusuke Urameshi and Keiko Yukimura

Yusuke, a street-tough turned Spirit Detective, and his childhood love interest, Keiko, are two old school anime characters from Yu Yu Hakusho. Their love for each other is apparent from the very beginning of the anime. Yet, as Yusuke’s life is taken over by his job as Spirit Detective, Keiko feels more and more disconnect between her and Yusuke. Patience and determination mark this anime romance as she continues to support and trust Yusuke. Their final test comes when Yusuke asks her to wait for him for three years while he is in the demon world. Finally, four and a half years later, Keiko is just about done waiting for Yusuke and, in an amazing scene where Keiko has just shouted out her frustrations, Yusuke finally returns and tells her she doesn’t have to wait any longer.

1 Kenshin and Kaoru

Kenshin and Kaoru are two of the main protagonists of Rurouni Kenshin and their romance holds a special place in many fan’s hearts. Kaoru is able to see past Kenshin’s old life as a cold-hearted killer and slowly falls in love with the man over the course of the anime. As situations heat up driving Kenshin to once again fall back into the man that he was, Korou becomes his lifeline to the man he wants to be. Not only does Kaoru prevent Kenshin from falling back into his old ways when he is about to finish off Udo Jin-e, but she also follows him to Kyoto to once again save his soul and bring him home. Kaoru is Kenshin’s saving grace and provides him with a purpose to survive his trials with his soul intact, making this relationship one of the best in any anime.
