DC Comics has a lot of characters whose reputations and looks make fans think they’re not all that smart, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

10 DC Characters Who Are Smarter Than They Look

There are many highly intelligent characters in the vast DC Multiverse and these are the characters that can be as, if not more deadly, with their minds. The famous examples being Barbara Gordon, Batman, Lex Luthor, and even Martian Manhunter but are only a small amount.

Within the DC realm, there are also characters who are quite deceptive in terms of being geniuses. At first glance, some characters give the impression that they are simply average or in some cases, seem like they don’t belong in the hero/villain business but surprise the viewer with their true mind’s potential.

10 Captain Cold

One of the Flash’s oldest villains and rivals, Captain Cold is a robber with a more honorable moral code than most criminals in the DC universe. At first, he appears to be a wannabe version of Mr. Freeze but he’s actually quite an impressive criminal.

Not only can he predict and react to the Flash’s movements but he can plan out an entire heist to the literal microsecond. On top of that, his years of wielding and repairing his signature cold gun have made him into a technological master.

9 Guy Gardner

10 DC Characters Who Are Smarter Than They Look

The general impression that Guy Gardner gives off is someone the least qualified to be a Green Lantern. He’s crude, mean-spirited, unable to work with others, and hates nearly every person he meets. This is due to his troubled childhood, having an abusive father, and became a juvenile delinquent.

However, Guy’s ultra-macho and bad boy attitude is mainly a front to the fact that he seeks to be better than his father. When Guy Gardner drops the act, he can not only be a great Green Lantern but a leader figure. He may not be book smart but he’s had a lot of experience that leads to him being wiser than one might think.

8 Superman

It’s a very common misconception that Superman is all brawn and no brains. This is actually incorrect as Kryptonian brains are as strong as their bodies, allowing them to process things much faster than humans.

While it can depend on the incarnation, Clark Kent is shown to be an educated man who excelled through high school and college. Also, if Superman was the dullard that many mistake him for, then Lex Luthor never would have lost.

7 Shazam

10 DC Characters Who Are Smarter Than They Look

Billy Batson is indeed a kid in a grown man’s body à la Tom Hanks’ Big, so it’s easy to see why some might think he’s not that bright. However, many forget the acronym that is his name with the wisdom of Solomon. While wisdom does not equal maturity or experience, the god-like power of Shazam does grant Billy knowledge.

Typically though, Shazam keeps his boyish sense of humor and personality. If the situation calls for it, Shazam’s wisdom can help the Justice League during a crisis.

6 Green Arrow

10 DC Characters Who Are Smarter Than They Look

Where Bruce Wayne simply puts on the performance of a cocky billionaire playboy, Oliver Queen is not a performance. As both Oliver Queen and Green Arrow, he is one of the sassiest and egotistical yet hilarious characters to exist with DC. So much so that the only woman to keep up with Green Arrow is Black Canary.

Black Canary sees the truth of Oliver and much like Guy Gardner, it’s a front. Oliver Queen is actually an honorable man who seeks to fix his city and the world if he can. Behind all the quips is a good man with a big heart.

5 Cyborg

10 DC Characters Who Are Smarter Than They Look

When it comes to Victor Stone AKA Cyborg, most think of him as the goofball with a big heart and bigger stomach. Or he’s the tough guy who got lucky with a bunch of cybernetic enhancements. This is the farthest thing from the truth; yes, he might have been a jock but he also rivaled his scientist father in terms of intelligence.

Victor Stone wanted to be a football player with brains. So when combined with Mother Box technology, Victor is able to understand the flood of data and programs flowing through his brain. He was already intelligent and the Cyborg part of him just tripled that.

4 Bane

10 DC Characters Who Are Smarter Than They Look

Ignoring the likes of 1997’s Batman & Robin, Bane is a tactical mastermind that rivals Batman. This comes as a surprise for many readers since he just looks like a typical bruiser character. A kind of villain one would expect to be the hired gun for the brains of the operations.

Instead, Bane is brains and muscles, having kept up with Batman over the years and even beat him several times. This is all without the help of the strength-enhancing drug known as Venom.

3 Plastic Man

10 DC Characters Who Are Smarter Than They Look

This elastic hero named Eel O’Brien plays things off as him being the idiot of the Justice League. Constantly quipping and making a fool of himself but making the readers laugh. However, there is a reason why Eel was so effective as a criminal: he’s smart and is good at improvisation in a tight spot.

Even the likes of Superman and Batman have been taken aback by how capable Plastic Man can be. So this is why as a superhero, Plastic Man has remained a staple of the Justice League. There are even times when Plastic Man will take things seriously, showing his true potential.

2 Booster Gold

10 DC Characters Who Are Smarter Than They Look

In the distant future where Booster Gold is from, he is a bit of a loser. So he came to the past, seeking glory during a golden age of heroes. Unfortunately, his cocky attitude is mainly met with eye-rolls from the Justice League. Even Batman assumes Booster Gold is nothing but a poser in a fancy suit.

In actuality, Booster Gold is one of the best defenders of the DC timeline. He has saved the universe many times but sadly, none of the heroes ever remember it, leading to Booster not getting the credit he deserves. Sure, he’s cocky and a bit egotistical but he’s still a hero who earned his glory with fans.

1 Harley Quinn

Batman is great at deducing his villains but the one he always underestimates is Harley Quinn. Harley seems like nothing other than a goofy girlfriend for the Joker but she’s more than that. Before meeting the Joker, Harleen Quinzel was already one of the most promising young minds in psychology.

She was an intelligent woman which is why she is able to break Joker out of Arkham so many times. She has even helped Batman many times and remains one of the few constant Suicide Squad members. The silly, wacky, and cartoonish personality does a good job of hiding Harley’s resourcefulness and intelligence.
