Outside of Disney, Warner Bros. houses the most valuable IPs in Hollywood, and the studio’s 2022 release slate is one of the most impressive years they have had to date. Between the third Fantastic Beasts movie, a Sesame Street reboot, and the Mars-based sci-fi Moonshot, there’s so much to look forward to and those movies don’t even scratch the surface.
It’s likely that there could even be other Warner Bros. movies released at the back end of the year that haven’t yet been announced. But until then, the year is full of DC flicks, period thrillers, musical biopics, and some wild car horrors.
Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom
It’s surprising that it has been so long since the first Aquaman hit theatres. When Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is released in December, it will have been four years between the two movies. However, that’s even more reason to be excited, as Arthur Curry’s charisma, one-liners, and surfing on Parademons have been missed so much.
Though some Redditors have unpopular opinions about Aquaman, such as feeling the first film had an unfocused direction, James Wan is returning to the director’s chair. That means that there’ll even more explosive action and enormous set pieces than the last. But what makes the movie most intriguing is that Jason Mamoa has a writing credit, having helped to develop the story for the sequel.
The Duke
Despite Warner Bros. being one of the biggest Hollywood studios and a titan of blockbuster movies, it still has a keen eye on the festival circuit. This is evidenced by the purchase of The Duke, a British movie by director Roger Mitchell that follows a 60-year-old taxi driver who steals a Goya painting. It’s a comedy caper starring British icons Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren.
Aside from the all-star cast, there’s even more reason to be excited as the film has received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics. Though The Duke isn’t out until February 2022, it debuted at the Venice Film Festival in September 2020. When it was first screened, it was awarded five stars by several journals and currently sits at a cushy 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Black Adam
Being the movie studio responsible for the DC Extended Universe, Warner Bros. is gearing up for some huge releases in the franchise for next year. Surprisingly enough, there’ll be more DCEU movie releases than MCU films in 2022, and it all starts with Black Adam.
Black Adam has been long-awaited, as Dwayne Johnson has been attached to the role as far back as 2014. What makes Black Adam so interesting is that he isn’t so much a superhero as he is an antihero, and he’s the archnemesis of Shazam, meaning that fans will see an epic face-off somewhere down the line.
Evil Dead Rise
The Evil Dead series has lowkey become a great franchise, as not only are there the three original movies, but there’s a remake and a massively successful TV show, Ash vs. the Evil Dead. Instead of being a sequel to the 2013 remake like most people would expect, Evil Dead Rise is described as a fourth movie in the original series.
The great thing about that is it could mean that the comedy is back. The humor is a crucial element to the original movies, but there was a distinct lack of it whatsoever in the remake. Unfortunately, while it does seem like a return to form for the series, Bruce Campbell won’t be returning as Ash.
Salem’s Lot
There have been dozens of Stephen King adaptations over the decades, whether it’s the classic Stanley Kubrick horror The Shining or the beloved prison drama The Shawshank Redemption. But the next adaptation will be much more typical of King’s work, as Salem’s Lot has the potential to be the most terrifying yet.
Based on the novel of the same name, Salem’s Lot follows a man who travels back to his hometown of Jerusalem’s Lot only to find the existence of a vampire. And in even more typical King fashion, the protagonist is a writer. Coming from the screenwriter of the latest It movies, it seems like the source material is in safe hands.
Elvis
Between 2019’s Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman, and now this year’s Tick, Tick, Boom, biopics of rock musicians are hugely popular at the minute, and there’s no sign of the trend slowing down. In 2022, Warner Bros. will release Elvis, a biopic about the king of rock and roll himself.
Interestingly, the actor cast as the titular character, Austin Butler, isn’t the most well known, and audiences will probably know him best as the Manson family member Tex Watson in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. The movie is also directed by Baz Luhrman, one of the best musical directors of this generation. That means that Elvis could be full of spectacular with fantastical elements and dollops of postmodernism.
The Batman
Audiences have seen Batman so often lately on the big screen, whether it’s with Zack Snyder’s Justice League, in Batman v. Superman, or even as a child in Joker. But there hasn’t actually been a standalone Batman movie in almost 10 years. It may come as a surprise, but the wait between The Dark Knight Rises and The Batman is far greater than the one between Batman & Robin and Batman Begins.
Between the unbelievable ensemble cast and the movie’s mission statement, there’s a good chance the film could be the best Batman movie yet. The movie sports Robert Pattinson, Colin Farrell, Zoe Kravitz, Jeffrey Wright, and so many others. But more excitingly, the movie promises to actually portray Batman as the world’s greatest detective, something that even the best Batman movies have failed to do.
KIMI
Steven Soderbergh is one of the busiest filmmakers working today, as he directed two films in 2021 and has another one on the way. The director seems to have a great working relationship with Warner Bros. too, as this year’s No Sudden Move and Let Them All Talk are two of the best HBO Max exclusive movies.
KIMI will follow suit, and it sees the director doing what he does best. The movie is a thriller about employment bureaucracies when a woman attempts to report a violent crime she witnessed.
Don’t Worry Darling
Audiences might be wondering why they haven’t seen Olivia Wilde on-screen much lately, but that’s because she is now behind the camera more often than she’s in front of it. Don’t Worry Darling is the second movie directed by Wilde, and though details are sparse, what little is known about it makes it one of the most exciting upcoming releases of 2022.
The film is a 50s-based thriller that follows a husband who hides a disturbingly dark secret from his unhappy housewife. It also features two of the most promising young actors and recently inducted members of the MCU, Florence Pugh and Harry Styles.
The Flash
If audiences haven’t gotten fatigued by the copious amounts of Batman in movies by now, then The Flash will be the real test. Though the movie is about The Justice League’s very own speedster, the big selling point of the movie is the return of Michael Keaton’s Bruce Wayne/Batman.
Spider-Man: No Way Home isn’t the only movie that’s playing with the idea of multiverses, as the DCEU is doing the very same thing with this 2022 release. And with the teaser trailer revealing Keaton’s voice and hinting at the old Batmobile from the 1989 movie, it has left fans wondering what else could possibly be hidden in the film.
