For years, fans have patiently waited for confirmation about the Sinnoh remakes. Finally, in February 2021, the Pokémon Company confirmed the arrival of Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl with a teaser trailer. Now, for the August 18th Pokémon Presents, the company prepared a more detailed second trailer.

Among other things, this new trailer confirmed the games’ release date and showcased some returning aspects from the Gen IV games. It also revealed many additions to the story and enhancements to the gameplay, thus making the games a fresh new take that still commemorates the classic Diamond & Pearl that fans know and love.

10 Nintendo Switch Lite Dialga & Palkia Edition

The Pokémon Company released a Special Edition Nintendo DS Lite in 2006 to commemorate the release of Pokémon Diamond & Pearl. The box art Legendaries — Dialga and Palkia — decorated the console, known as the Onyx Dialga and Palkia Edition. It is one of the most memorable Special Editions in the franchise, one that veteran fans remember fondly.

Now, to celebrate the launch of the remakes, the Pokémon Company is once again releasing a Special Edition console, this time of the Nintendo Switch Lite. This new console will also feature Dialga and Palkia emblazoned in silver and gold, respectively.

9 Clothes And Hair Customization Will Be Possible

One of the best parts of later games is the option to customize the main character. While Pokémon hasn’t gone as far as to allow actual character design, but they did include clothes and hairstyle customization, starting with Generation VI. The trailer confirms that Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl will preserve this aspect that’s become very popular.

Several outfits appear during the trailer, many of them a perfect example of the Sinnoh region’s cold climate. Dawn and Lucas also sport different hairstyles during the trailer, confirming the return of the hair salons that featured prominently in Gens VI, VII, and VIII.

8 Contests Are Back

Contests are a Gen IV feature that fans wanted to keep in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, and their wish came true. The trailer not only confirmed the return of this long-lost Pokémon tradition but actually devoted a significant portion of its length showcasing it.

Scenes of Dawn and Lucas during Super Contest Shows appear in the trailer, reminding fans of how fun they were. Stickers will also make a return, allowing players to decorate their PokéBalls and customize the effects that appear when Pokémon come out.

7 The Grand Underground

10 Things We Learned From The New Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl Trailer

One of the best parts of the Gen IV games was the Underground, an enormous area that existed beneath Sinnoh and spread around the entire region. While in it, fans could dig for fossils, uncover treasures, and build their own secret bases.

The trailer confirmed the return of this venerable feature, while also revealing some of its new enhancements. It will still allow players to dig for fossils and gems and will still support secret bases. However, the Underground is now the portal to a remake-exclusive area called Pokémon Hideaways (more on that later).

6 Secret Bases Will Play A More Prominent Role

Speaking of Secret Bases, they were one of the biggest draws when the original games came out. The tradition began on the Hoenn games and carried on to Diamond & Pearl, before disappearing in Gen V. But bases returned in the Gen III remakes and will also appear in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl.

Unlike in ORAS, where they served as a nostalgic callback, the bases in BD & SP serve another purpose. The trailer specifies that the Pokémon that appear in the Pokémon Hideways are directly related to the statues players use to decorate their Secret Bases. The location and method to acquire these statues remain unknown as of now. However, the trailer confirms that some of the most iconic Pokémon from Generation I — Snorlax, Charizard, and Venasaur — will be available in statue form.

5 Pokémon Hideaways

The Gen VIII games are among the most divisive games in the franchise. Players disliked many aspects of their gameplay and design, but the inclusion of the Wild Area did receive some praise. Indeed, the Wild Area was one of the things from Sword & Shield that players wanted in the Gen IV remakes.

Enter the Pokémon Hideaways. These areas exist in the Sinnoh Underground and house many Pokémon that are otherwise inaccessible. Furthermore, the Hideaways also have several climates, and therefore are home to unique sets of Pokémon. The trailer confirms the existence of snowy, volcanic, dry, and forest Hideaways, and there should at least be one more to house the Water-type Pokémon.

4 Pokémon In The Overworld

The Switch games introduced a game-changing feature to the games: Pokémon in the Overworld. This simple but effective addition greatly enhances the immersive quality of the games by strengthening the Pokémon world within. It is also convenient, as it facilitates the catching and avoiding of certain Pokémon.

The trailer for the remakes doesn’t confirm if Pokémon will exist in the Overworld on Sinnoh’s routes. However, the scenes set in the Pokémon Hideaways feature several Overworld Pokémon, ratifying that this feature will indeed appear in Brilliant Diamond & Shing Pearl.

3 Enhanced Pokédex

10 Things We Learned From The New Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl Trailer

One of the biggest complaints about the original Diamond & Pearl was its unbalanced Pokédex. The region is infamous for featuring only five Fire-type Pokémon in its original games, three of which were the Starter and its two evolutions. The Platinum expansion introduced some variety to the mix, but Sinnoh remained lacking some of the coolest and best Fire-type Pokémon.

Brief glimpses of Houndoom, Altaria, Tangrowth, Togepi, Togekiss, Yanmega, and Leafeon, confirm that Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl will not feature the original Diamond & Pearl Pokédex that many fans consider incomplete. Furthermore, the previously mentioned Charizard and Venasaur hint that the remakes will feature Pokémon that weren’t accessible in Gen IV, not even in Platinum.

2 Walking Pokémon

Fans rejoiced when they noticed Pokémon following the player character in the trailer. Walking Pokémon first appeared in Pokémon Yellow before making a return in Generation IV. Diamond, Pearl, & Platinum used this gimmick, but HeartGold & SoulSilver took it to the next level.

Walking Pokémon return in BD & SP, as evidenced by the shots of Lucario, Piplup, Tangrowth, Honckrow, and Buizel running, or in Honchkrow’s case, flying behind their Pokémon. The Let’s Go games introduced the rideable Pokémon feature, but it’s unclear if this will be possible in BD & SP.

1 Release Date: November 19, 2021

The original trailer for Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl hinted at a “late 2021” release but it didn’t go into specifics. Now, fans have a clear answer as to when these games will come out: November 19, 2021. The Pokémon Company will have at least one surprise left before the game’s release, but it’s unlikely that another trailer will come out.

Not that the remakes need another one. The anticipation from fans who have been waiting for these remakes for years is at an all-time high. The confirmation that the upcoming Pokémon Legends: Arceus game will come out in January 2022 is just the icing on the cake. In other words, it’s the perfect time to be a Pokémon fan.
