Video games have been a constant in the world of film for a long time. Full of unique characters and one of a kind stories, video games are great starters for franchises. However, while films based on games have great potential, only a few have hit the mark.

That is not to say that the franchises don’t deserve a second chance. In fact, while a few should remain in the shadows forever, others need their moment to shine in reboot form. Here are five video game movies that deserve a reboot and five that don’t.

10 Deserve: Assasins Creed

With the premise of a secret society of assassins that wind through history, one would expect it to deliver a film even better than the game it’s based on. Yet, 2016’s version of Assasins Creed was a disappointment.

That doesn’t mean the license deserves to lie in the dark though. With such an interesting premise, Assasins Creed needs a second chance to see the game’s vision brought to life properly. Either as a tv show or another film, one can hope to see the game adapted again.

9 Don’t: Hitman

If Hollywood had a nickel for every reboot it pumped out, it wouldn’t need to make movies. Back in 2005, the world of filmmaking took the popular franchise Hitman and attempted to make a movie. When the project failed to land a sequel, Hollywood tried again in 2015 with Hitman: Agent 47.

Given that Hitman failed twice to get a film series off the ground, it goes without saying that the franchise doesn’t deserve a third. Two reboots are more than any license deserves and Hitman is one of those properties.

8 Deserve: Far Cry

Over the years, there has been a video game series that has become known as one of the craziest of all time. Far Cry usually includes fascinating themes, weapons, and characters, but somehow, the 2008 film failed to capture any of this insanity.

As such, Far Cry is a perfect candidate for a franchise that deserves a second chance to show just how crazy the games are. With the right director, story, and actors, one can create a Far Cry great reboot and make fans of the series proud.

7 Don’t: Warcraft

When creating a film, many adaptations tend to suffer from the same problem: Too much information. With Warcraft, there isn’t just too much information, there is so much information it should have been a tv series or five different films.

When a studio has a chance to make one of the most popular games of all time into a film, they wouldn’t want to blow it. Considering the disaster that the 2016 film was, it all but tanked any chances for a reboot.

6 Deserve: Rampage

Sometimes, the more obscure the series, the more likely it is that an adaptation will succeed. When it was announced that The Rock would be starring in Rampage, a movie based on a gaming series with the same name, many fans were left scratching their heads before and after the release.

Unfortunately, the film’s overly complicated plot and over-the-top acting spawned a mostly forgettable blockbuster. Rampage the game has a unique enough premise that it deserves to be seen again on the big or small screen, in an adaptation that allows room for great character moments and sci-fi horror.

5 Don’t: Tomb Raider

It goes without saying that Indiana Jones inspired many ideas quite similar to the treasure hunting hero. Tomb Raider is one such franchise; however, while Indiana Jones found the gold, the Tomb Raider movies have not.

The 2001 film and the 2018 Tomb Raider made enough money to earn themselves sequels. However, while a follow-up for the 2018 version is on its way, that should be the end of these messy and overstuffed films.

4 Deserve: Super Mario Bros

Without a doubt, Super Mario Bros is one, if not the, worst video game movie ever made. With no resemblance at all to the classic games, the movie basically does its own thing while keeping the names of the characters. So does it deserve another chance?

The answer is yes, mainly due to the fact that Sonic The Hedgehog and other films like it have turned out well. It may be time for a proper Super Mario Bros reboot that honors the iconic gaming franchise in a way that can make fans forget the 1993 film.

3 Don’t: Prince Of Persia: Sands Of Time

Now, Prince Of Persia: Sands Of Time isn’t a terrible film. While it has issues and is a bit sloppy, it’s still an enjoyable film that works despite a weak plot.

Given the way it was done, Prince Of Persia: Sands Of Time has already had its film and does not need or even deserve a reboot. It’s a sad fact that Prince of Persia will probably never be rebooted again given the original film’s poor box office performance.

2 Deserves: Doom

Where does one start with a series like Doom? When the movie based on the game came out in 2005, fans were eager to see what the filmmakers had in store…only to be left disappointed. Even 2018’s reboot, Doom: Annihilation, ended in failure.

However, given the success of 2016’s Doom and Doom Eternal, fans are still awaiting a proper adaptation and they should get it. With the right filmmaker and story, another Doom reboot can attract more attention to the franchise.

1 Don’t: Resident Evil

This is one movie franchise based on a gaming property that has had far too many chances to get the source series right. In the games, Resident Evil is a taut action-horror series that showcases various characters as they deal with the fallout of a viral outbreak.

The only games that any of the eight films even tried to honor were the first two; even then, the results were mediocre at best. As such, Resident Evil has worn out its welcome and should remain in storage.
