All Of Marvel’s Major Crime Bosses Are Coming After SpiderMan

Warning: contains spoilers for Amazing Spider-Man #59

In the latest issue of Marvel Comics’ Amazing Spider-Man, Peter Parker is still dealing with the trauma of being captured, killed, and resurrected by Kindred, whom he now knows is his old friend Harry Osborn (or a least a version of him). Now, thanks to the efforts of Mary Jane and a Green Goblin seeking redemption, Spider-Man and his allies were saved from Kindred, and the demonic Harry was put in a special cage created by the Darkforce Dimension, and is now being held at the Ravencroft Institute. However, things are far from settled down for the Webslinger, as it looks like he’ll now have to contend with the combined strength of New York’s major crime bosses, and it’s all thanks to the Kingpin.

Ever since Wilson Fisk became the Mayor of New York after Marvel’s Secret Empire event, the Kingpin has been up to no good, though Kindred seemed to have some sort of control over him, the result of promises made if the Kingpin complied. Furthermore, while Fisk has long been wanting to get his hands on the ancient and powerful Tablet of Life and Destiny in the possession of Boomerang, the former villain is roommates with Spider-Man, and Kindred made it clear almost two years ago that Spider-Man was not to be harmed, rendering Fisk very few opportunities to claim his prize…until now.

This brings things to Amazing Spider-Man #59 from writer Nick Spencer with art by Marcelo Ferreira. It seems as though Fisk has found a new avenue to get what he wants with Mr. Negative. While Spider-Man was about to fight and take the dark version of Martin Li down, Fisk and the police arrived out of nowhere, claiming that they were there to “arrest” Mr. Negative, and the powerful crime boss complied without a fight. With the obvious rescue pulled off, Fisk promises to secure and give back all of the territories in New York that were once Negative’s, in exchange for the Tablet of Death and Entropy, the dark opposite of the original tablet Fisk has been after. Furthermore, with Kindred out of the way, the issue ends with Kingpin hiring Negative to get the Tablet of Life and Destiny for him, joining several other crime bosses Fisk has already assembled to get it.

It certainly is an impressive coalition of crime Fisk has brought together, featuring a who’s who of all the major players in New York’s underworld such as the Owl, Black Mariah, Hammerhead, Silvermane, and more. With Mr. Negative joining their ranks and vast resources, Fisk is going all out, and it makes sense once readers learn what the artifacts can do. Negative revealed that joining the tablets together allows for a one-time opportunity to resurrect the dead, and it’s pretty obvious that Fisk wants to bring back his late wife, Vanessa.

Clearly, the Kingpin is willing to do whatever it takes to get what he wants, and he’s no longer hindered by Kindred. As a result, it’s evident that a whole storm of trouble is coming for Spider-Man and Boomerang in future issues from Nick Spencer, now that quite literally all of the major criminal leaders in the city have united against them in Marvel Comics.
