Netflix dropped the second season of After Life in April of this year. Starring Ricky Gervais, the second season follows Tony on his path to a better life after the death of his wife Lisa. While Tony looks okay from afar, he’s still the same sad man he is behind closed doors. The one thing that helps Tony get out of his mind and his home is his job at the Tambury Gazette.
As a feature writer, Tony’s job is to interview locals in the small town of Tambury. Along the way, we meet the comically strange characters in Tony’s town through the paper. In each episode, Tony and his co-worker Lenny interview a new person for the paper and each interview seems to be stranger than the last. To see which of the 10 strangest interviews made our list, keep scrolling!
10 The Boy Who Plays Instruments With His Nose
In the second episode of the first season, Tony and Lenny are introduced to a single mom named June and her son James. James as an incredible talent that just had to be shared with the rest of Tambury: he can play the recorder with his nose.
Lenny and Tony stand back in awe as this young man blows air into the recorder with nothing but his nostrils. James’s mother is quite proud of her son, even though he’s jobless and does nothing but play the recorder. At least the scene ended with June and Lenny setting up a date…
9 The Woman Who Was Saved By Her Weight
In the fourth episode, Tony and Lenny head to the hospital to interview a woman who was recovering from an incident. What made her story so newsworthy is what her doctor told her.
The poor woman slid down the side of a hill and landed on a chunk of wood with a nail sticking out of it. The woman landed right on the nail and it went straight through her. However, due to her obesity, her doctor claimed her larger size saved her life because the nail missed all her internal organs. Tony, of course, debunked his reasoning and made it uncomfortable for all.
8 The Man Who Was Putting His Mail In A Trash Bin
In the second season, Tony and Lenny meet a very annoyed citizen. Due to his bad eyesight, he had been placing his mail in a trash bin for dog waste. The trash bin looked slightly like a mailbox, which is why he continued to place his mail in it.
But after his bills were late and his sister wasn’t returning his messages, he found out he had been writing checks and letters and placing them right in the trash.
7 The Woman Who Creates Rice Pudding Out Breastmilk
In the fifth episode of the first season, Tony and Lenny interview a woman who was making the most out of her breastmilk. Not wanting to waste her breastmilk, she decided to make rice pudding out of her milk because it was more natural than using cows’ milk.
The thought of drinking a woman’s breastmilk was enough to make Tony gag but Lenny ate the rice pudding without a second thought!
6 The Man Who Received The Same Birthday Card
In the pilot episode, fans learn just how boring Tony’s job can really be. As a features writer, Tony and Lenny go around the town of Tambury for features for the paper.
However, it appears Tambury isn’t the most news-worthy town because the first interview we see is a man who received five of the same birthday cards in one day. He was astounded that he was given the same birthday card by five different people but was it really all that astounding?
5 The Woman Who Speaks To Cats
The idea of a crazy cat lady makes for a funny joke but in the second season, it was newsworthy for the Tambury Gazette. Not only was this lady alone with a house full of cats but she claimed she could speak to cats as well. She told Tony that she discovered she could speak to cats after her daughter passed away.
The cat she took in was her cat and the two bonded over missing her. Tony realized that this woman wasn’t “crazy,” she was just lonely.
4 The Man Who Saw A Face In His Wall
In the third episode of the first season, Tony is still morning the loss of his wife and doesn’t’ appear to notice his hostility towards others. His disinterest and disdain for the mediocre are apparent when he interviews a man who sees the face of Sir Kenneth Branagh.
He said the face just started appearing and he couldn’t help himself but see the relation. This is the kind of “groundbreaking” interviews Tony loathes.
3 The Woman Who Sued For Botched Surgery
In the second season, Tony has his ups and downs with his emotions. Whenever he’s low, he interviews others who have it worse than him and it puts things back in perspective. But in the fourth episode of the second season, he meets a woman he’s genuinely curious about.
She became addicted to plastic surgery in her 20’s and couldn’t stop, resulting in a botched surgery. With leaky lips and a rock-solid chest, she tells Tony and Lenny about her surgeries, much to their disbelief.
2 The Woman Who Was Mad To Be 100 Years Old
Reaching 100 years of age is a huge accomplishment. A person has stories upon stories of lifetimes they’ve lived. But in After Life, the woman being interviewed was anything but happy about being 100 years old; She was pissed.
After getting a letter from Queen Elizabeth II, congratulating her on reaching 100, the woman was annoyed instead of proud. She told Tony and Lenny that she was in pain all the time and hated the people around her. She wants to die to escape the madness but keeps on living. Her entire mindset fascinates Tony, of course.
1 Night Of 1,000 Stars
In the second season, James introduces Brian to a theater group. They planned a revue show called “Night of 1,000 Stars” where everyone is free to express themselves in any way they’d like.
The Tambury Gazette decided to interview those behind the show but it appeared more like a freakshow than anything. With June, Brian, James, and Rebecca apart of the show, anything could have happened on opening night.
