Batwoman Kate Kane Is About to Show the DC Universe That Cryptids Are Real

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Truth & Justice #13, by Grace Ellis, Maria Laura Sanapo, Wendy Broome and Becca Carey, on sale now.

The DC Universe is home to just about every breed and species of hero or villain. Between humans, aliens, powered beings and other various forms of intelligence, DC has introduced characters from all aspects of culture and media. One group that has largely stayed away from the DC Universe’s Prime Earth is the cryptids. Creatures like Bigfoot or the Yeti have been claimed to exist, but have never actually been proven to be real. It looks like that might change with Batwoman’s most recent discovery in Truth & Justice #13.

Kate Kane needed a break from the constant action within Gotham City and decided it was time for a vacation. As Kate drove through the Appalachian Mountains, she decided to pull off the road to grab a drink before finding her way to Maggie Sawyer’s cabin. She took the exit towards Shale Pass which claimed to be the home of the Shale Pass Mothman. Before Kate can even park her car, a dark shadow bolted in front of her and landed on a nearby rooftop. She then headed to a local bar where she inquired about what she had seen.

The bartender initially waved off Kate’s questions, but the sight of money got her to talk. Kate claimed that she saw something big with glowing red eyes on a nearby rooftop. The bartender joked and asked if Kate was a monster hunter before she waved her off. After Kate paid the bartender, she learned that the Mothman is essentially a legend. The bartender claims that people in Shale Pass use it as a way to bring in more tourism. Kate was doubtful of this answer because she just had her own experience with the creature. Before she can ask anything further, a large crash came from outside the building where Kate discovered that something large had landed on the hood of her car and damaged it. It now appears that Kate is going to take this investigation into her own hands.

The idea of Mothman is an interesting one, especially when looking at it in the scheme of the DC Universe. The real Mothman of folklore has become one of the most popular cryptids in America and has been at the center many novels and TV shows. The very first sighting of the Mothman took place in West Virginia in 1966. Here, two couples claimed to be chased down a street by a terrifying man with glowing red eyes and ten-foot wings. These claims were followed by many other sightings throughout the following days.

The Mothman slowly evolved, from what the public saw as a simple but terrifying creature, into an omen of horrible tragedies that would affect their community. This came after the collapse of the Silver Bridge in 1967 which people connected to the Mothman. Ironically enough, Batman actually inspired the name for the Mothman. Batman and his rouge’s gallery were at the height of their popularity, so it only made sense to give this supposed moth/human hybrid a similar name.

The introduction of a real Mothman in the pages of Truth & Justice could bring forward new species and potentially new heroes or villains. DC could plausibly tie the tragedies that are already blamed on the Mothman to their new version. This could create a brand-new villain with a real-life origin for Batwoman to battle. This could also provide an opportunity for other cryptids to be proven real in the DC Universe. Bigfoot, the Yeti, Chupacabra and many more could come to light through other heroes’ stories. With aliens and a whole manner of other creatures, the idea of cryptids existing on Prime Earth is anything but far-fetched.

With Kate Kane’s car wrecked, she is currently stranded in the small town of Shale Pass. Batwoman is in dire need of distraction and this could prove to be extremely therapeutic for her. Without the distractions of the big city, she could potentially be facing an all-new beast in the Shale Pass Mothman. Whatever threat this cryptid brings, Batwoman will be sure to fight back.
