Sorting out when The Book of Boba Fett takes place in the Star Wars timeline can be a little complicated. The new Disney+ series stars Temuera Morrison as Boba Fett and Ming-Na Wen as Fennec Shand, with Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau producing and directing alongside Robert Rodriguez and Bryce Dallas Howard. Though no official episode count has been released yet, reports of both a four-episode and an eight-episode run have surfaced since the show was announced.

Per The Book of Boba Fett’s first trailer, the series will pick up where Fett and Fennec’s story left off at the end of The Mandalorian season 2. The season’s final shot showed Boba Fett killing Bib Fortuna – the former right-hand of Jabba the Hutt’s – and claiming Jabba’s underworld throne for his own, with Fennec by his side. The Book of Boba Fett trailer has confirmed that the show’s story will revolve around Fett and Fennec rebuilding Jabba’s underworld empire, doing battle with some fearsome foes along the way.

As for the Book of Boba Fett timeline, the show seems to be set pretty closely after the events of The Mandalorian season 2 finale. That would put The Book of Boba Fett at either the end of 9 ABY (After the Battle of Yavin) – when The Mandalorian takes place – or the start of 10 ABY. Since Return of the Jedi takes place in 5 ABY, that sets The Book of Boba Fett about five years after the end of the original Star Wars trilogy. Like The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett is set in the early days of the New Republic, when the Imperial Remnant is still at large. Furthermore, a small time jump is potentially being hinted at given all the scuff marks on Boba Fett’s armor, which was repainted towards the end of The Mandalorian season 2.

Because of that close proximity to the end of The Mandalorian season 2, it’s possible that The Book of Boba Fett could continue some plot threads from the other show and set up storylines for The Mandalorian season 3. Fett himself has close if confusing ties to the Mandalorian people, so characters like Din Djarin and Bo-Katan Kryze could absolutely show up in his and Fennec’s story. Because The Mandalorian season 3 looks like it will be dealing more heavily with Mandalore the planet, it would make sense for The Book of Boba Fett to act as a kind of bridge from season 2.

Additionally, The Book of Boba Fett could help set up some of the other upcoming New Republic era Star Wars shows, like Ahsoka and Rangers of the New Republic, which reportedly has exited active development. Disney has paid a lot of lip service to the idea of crossover events taking place between the New Republic era series, and with The Book of Boba Fett being only the second such Star Wars show to premiere, it would be an ideal testing ground for overlapping storylines.
