Borderlands contains an outrageous, hilarious, and out-there cast of characters who aren’t afraid to say what they think.

The Borderlands series is full of sociopathic characters with bitingly funny one-liners. Half the fun of the game is running around, shooting at these colorful NPCs as they scream random and ridiculous phrases at the protagonist.

In Borderlands, players find themselves on the Hyperion-controlled planet, Pandora, playing as a vault-hunter who meets a ragtag, unstable band of lunatics whose goal is to unseat Hyperion and their villainous counterparts from their positions of power.

Robots Need Blood Too

“I Have No Blood, So I’m Taking Yours.”

Fl4k, the robot Beastmaster is one of the playable character options in Borderlands 3. A new character in the Borderlands series, Fl4k has the habit of delivering hilarious lines in a completely deadpan robotic voice that makes him a favorite to play as in the game. This quote is one of his favorites to trot out after a successful kill.

Plus, players who use Fl4k get to control one of three cute-but-deadly pets at a time (four, in the Director’s Cut) who buff his stats and attack enemies as he makes funny, adorable comments praising their fighting skills.

RIP Scooter

“Catch A Ride!”

Although the quote itself isn’t necessarily hilarious, the way popular character Scooter announces it in his Southern drawl has players instantly repeating the famous catchphrase each time they hear it throughout the games.

Scooter and the ‘Catch A Ride’ are cornerstones of the Borderlands series and it shocked and saddened players when he was unceremoniously and unexpectedly killed off in Tales From The Borderlands.

A Villain That Makes A Good Point

Handsome Jack is the loveable villain of Borderlands 2 and makes further appearances in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel!, Tales From The Borderlands, and Borderlands 3. Throughout the games, the player is assaulted by taunts and absent-minded hysterical comments from Handsome Jack as they make their way across the Borderlands universe.

Handsome Jack has received widespread critical acclaim, despite largely appearing over audio broadcasts for the bulk of the games, making his highly memorable villainy that much more impressive.

Psychos are a favorite villain NPC of the entire Borderlands series, making appearances throughout every game. They are bandits, driven insane by their desire for the vaults, and are identifiable by their clothing and terrifying psychotic laugh.

They come in a variety of different melee classes and yell out random, disturbing phrases as they run towards the player at high speed. “You’re gonna be my new meat bicycle” is one of a long list of laugh-out-loud expressions the player will hear from psychos throughout the game.

Going Psycho

“Maybe You’re Weighing The Moral Pros And Cons Of The… OH MY GOD, SHOOT ME IN THE FACE!!!”

Speaking of psychos, players will occasionally come across one that’s a bit different from the traditional cannon-fodder psycho in enemy camps. One of these is Face McShooty, a completely non-hostile psycho that literally exists to offer the protagonist a side quest to…. shoot him in the face.

If the player takes the quest and then ignores Face McShooty, he will go on a rant about how he hasn’t been shot in the face yet. It’s a totally unnecessary, hilarious addition to the Borderlands universe.

What Can She Get You?

“They Say Money Can’t Buy You Love, But It’s A Damned Good Replacement.”

Mad Moxxi is a major NPC in the Borderlands universe. She appears as the ruler and voice-over at the Underdome, and as the bar owner at Concordia and Sanctuary. In some ways, she is the stereotypical sexy, dangerous side character with a chequered past. But she also is a skilled fighter, protective companion, and accepts everyone for who they are.

Moxxi usually appears to provide side quests and innuendos throughout the games, occasionally teetering on both sides of the conflict, having previously dated Handsome Jack and Roland on separate occasions.

That Time Sanctuary Blew Up

“Sanctuary’s Gone?! But The Bank! All My Stuff! All My Crucial Information! YES! I’M OFF THE GRID, BABY! NO MORE CREDITORS! Seriously, I Owe A Lot Of People A Lot Of Money.”

Claptrap, or CL4P-TP, is the pain-in-the-behind, super enthusiastic NPC robot friend that pops up throughout the player’s adventures in Borderlands. He is both annoying and an essential part of the universe, whirring about, causing trouble, and bragging about his usefulness (which never seems to manifest).

Claptrap offers multiple side-quests, including arranging his birthday party, which, sadly, no one attends. But if the player is lucky, they can get a high-five for organizing it anyway!

Don’t Mention Bloodwing…

Mordecai is a playable character in Borderlands and shows up in all the other games as an NPC. He’s an animal lover, sharpshooter, and member of the Crimson Raiders alongside Roland, Brick, and Lilith.

His most memorable moment is during Borderlands 2 when he shows up to the fight along with his pet bird Bloodwing as support for the player. Bloodwing’s subsequent shocking demise is an unexpectedly heart-breaking moment in an otherwise fun and silly game.

Monocle-Phobia

“It’s Sad To Think Not Everyone In My Family Will Recognize Winny’s And My Nuptials. Great-Uncle Boris Is From Another Time, You See, And Refuses To Acknowledge The Rights of Men Who Don’t Wear Monocles.”

Sir Hammerlock is an NPC introduced in Borderlands 2. He has a steam-punk Victorian vibe, with modern-day values, and loves a good hunt. He is one of the primary quest-givers in the second game and reappears in Borderlands 3 with his husband, Wainwright, who he lovingly nicknames Winny.

Although occasionally long-winded, if the player can be bothered to stand around and listen to Sir Hammerlock, there are plenty of gems to uncover in his ramblings and musings.

Scary Things In Small Packages

“I’m A Little Teapot, Bloody And Cut! Here’s My Handle, Here’s My Butt.”

Tiny Tina is a scary, unstable 13-year-old explosives expert that appears in all the mainline Borderlands games after she and her parents were kidnapped by Hyperion and turned into test subjects.

Her character is so popular that she is the subject of a brand-new spin-off and the first Borderlands to be available on PlayStation 5: Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. Tiny Tina bounces around laughing maniacally and providing the player with side quests and explosives to kill Handsome Jack and destroy Hyperion.
