Cobra Kai Why Robby Is So Important To Kreese

At the end of season 3 of Cobra Kai, Robby Keene (Tanner Buchanan) ended up in the clutches of John Kreese (Martin Kove), and the troubled karate student will be key to his new sensei’s plans. Season 3 saw Robby go through one hardship after another. He began the season as a fugitive, running from an arrest warrant for leaving Miguel Diaz (Xolo Maridueña) in a coma during a massive fight. He was later imprisoned for the incident, where he was recruited for Cobra Kai by Kreese.

After joining Kreese’s dojo, Robby quickly adopted Cobra Kai’s ruthless, rule-breaking attitudes, even stealing a snake from the local zoo to win his sensei’s favor. Even during the end-of-season confrontation between Kreese, his father Johnny (Willian Zabka), and former sensei Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio), Robby still ultimately stuck by Kreese.

Robby siding with Kreese cemented his status as Cobra Kai’s new star student, and he will be integral to the sensei’s plan to win the next All-Valley tournament. Robby is the perfect cocktail of technical karate skill and boiling anger for Kreese to exploit in the future, and his traumatic past leaves him particularly vulnerable to Kreese’s manipulation.

Cobra Kai will have fierce competition in the upcoming tournament. Miyagi-Do and the newly formed Eagle Fang Karate joining forces means some of the strongest students in the series will be fighting for the same team. Despite not winning the All-Valley tournament in season 1, Robby is an excellent martial artist. Under Daniel’s tutelage, he learned a two-legged kick that even his sensei was unable to do, and has proved himself to be a dedicated student. With Robby’s rival Miguel only recently back in fighting shape, he may be able to overcome Miguel in the upcoming tournament and secure a win for Kreese.

Along with Robby’s physical advantage over Miguel, the two fighters already have beef. They have come into conflict several times over their shared love interest, Sam Larusso (Mary Mouser). Miguel and Sam reignited their romance during season 3 while Robby was in prison (or at least he believes they did), leaving him heartbroken. Both his father figures have failed him as well: Johnny missed their scheduled visitation because he was with Miguel at the hospital, once again making Robby feel second-best, while Daniel calling the police on Roby and forcing him to surrender himself to authorities felt like a betrayal to the young man. So far, Kreese seemed to be the only one who came through for Robby. He even gave the newly-minted Cobra Kai a place to stay at the dojo after his release, cementing the idea that the Vietnam veteran is the only adult who will be there for him. His reliance on Kreese makes him unlikely to question his master’s methods, and Kreese could easily use Robby’s anger at the world to his advantage. He could push his student to channel his hatred into his fighting, while fueling it to grow stronger.

Kreese needs Robby to be his protégé now that Johny has rejected his teachings. Robby is the perfect student for Kreese to use to manipulate his former star-pupil because of their broken father-son relationship; Kreese is taking advantage of the existing history between Robby and Johnny, and he’s manipulating both of them for his own gain. Daniel and Johnny will have to repair their respective relationships with Robby in order to defeat the increasingly-volatile dojo in Cobra Kai season 4 — a unique challenge that requires a keen sense of balance.
