Curb Your Enthusiasm: The 10 Saddest Things About Cheryl

Cheryl, Larry’s ex-wife, is one of the best characters on Curb Your Enthusiasm. But the show’s moral compass also faces sad truths.

When it comes to Curb Your Enthusiasm, as great and hilarious as the characters are, there’s very little about any of them that shows how happy and optimistic they are. After visiting the saddest things about Larry, there are just as many about Cheryl, his ex-wife.

Cheryl is one of the show’s best supporting characters, and though she is far from perfect, she is as close to a moral compass that the show has. This means that when something sad happens to her, it’s harder to watch than when something terrible happens to Larry or Jeff.

10 Allows Larry To Cheat On Her For Their Anniversary

Larry and Cheryl’s relationship was never as strong as either of them thought, and that was never more evident than in the first episode of season 4.

The episode begins with a flashback to when the couple first talked about getting married, and Cheryl promises Larry that for their tenth anniversary, she will let him sleep with any woman he wants. The whole season then follows Larry trying to find a woman he wants to sleep with.

9 Larry Grasses On Cheryl

Cheryl is very patient with Larry, which is one of the reasons why she’s the Seinfeld creator’s best love interest, but enough was enough when she gave him another chance at the end of season seven.

When the two of them were in the middle of making amends and restarting their relationship, Larry finds out that Cheryl is the one responsible for the ring stain left on Julia’s table. Without hesitation, he calls up Julia to tattletale.

8 Susie Stops Talking To Her

In the final episode of season three, “The Grand Opening,” Cheryl explains that Susie isn’t really talking to her and that she keeps canceling the plans that the two of them have.

It’s hard not to feel sorry for Cheryl in the episode because Susie is one of the closest friends she has. However, it’s never explained why Susie stopped talking to her in the first place, which is one of the things that makes no sense about Cheryl.

7 Larry Doesn’t Care About Her Possibly Dying In A Plane Crash

Though Cheryl being unlikable is one of the unpopular opinions fans have, she probably ended up that way due to the years of grief she has had to suffer through with Larry.

When Cheryl is on a rocky flight, she calls Larry to speak with him for possibly the last time. But as the cable guy is at Larry’s house trying to fix the TV, he is totally preoccupied with that, doesn’t care about Cheryl, and hangs up on her.

6 Larry Doesn’t Care About Her Environmentalism

Cheryl has always been very active in charitable work, whether it’s adopting a whole family who lost their home in a hurricane or using environmentally friendly toilet paper, even if it does feel rough.

Larry doesn’t feel the same way about her environmentalism, and in fact combats it by sneakily using soft toilet paper behind her back, even if he did get caught red-handed.

5 Her Acting Career

It may be surprising to many fans as it’s barely ever mentioned, but before Cheryl worked for the non-profit environmental advocacy group, the NRDC, she was an actress.

Whether it’s from being too busy with her charitable work or Larry not wanting her to return to the profession, she hasn’t been able to act for years. And the only time she was able to take up acting again was when Larry afforded her the opportunity to work on the Seinfeld reunion in season seven.

4 Her Relationship With Jeff

Cheryl has always had a strange relationship with Jeff and they haven’t always seen eye to eye. Though it is never mentioned in the series, there is a scene in the pilot episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm in which both characters talk about how much they don’t like each other.

There’s always a shroud of awkwardness between Jeff and Cheryl, which is sad because she has to spend so much time with him, as his wife is her best friend.

3 Larry Always Hides Secrets From Her

Most episodes of the show feature Jeff and Larry working together to try to hide something from their wives, though they almost always end up failing as Susie and Cheryl are way too smart for them.

But for somebody who is always suspicious of people, Larry hides a lot from his wife. Whether it’s going golfing when he should be elsewhere or lying about where he got her gift’s from, Cheryl deserves much better considering how caring she is of him.

2 Larry Blames Her For Poisoning Richard’s Girlfriend

In Curb Your Enthusiasm, most characters are quick to pass the blame whenever they find themselves in a spot of bother, especially Larry. In “The Benadryl Brownie,” Larry accuses Cheryl of feeding Richard Lewis’ girlfriend peanuts, as he specifically told her that she was allergic to them.

It was simply a miscommunication that was taken way out of hand. But even though Cheryl is one of the few characters who can stand up for herself, she is still pulled into Larry and Richard’s plot to drug Deborah.

1 Forced To Visit A Porn Star’s House

In one of the earliest episodes of the series, Larry is invited to a dinner party by an old friend, who just happens to be a former adult movie star.

The character is played hilariously by Bob Odenkirk, who is one of the guest stars we want to see return to the series, but Cheryl is clearly uncomfortable for the whole time, especially when Odenkirk starts discussing his former film work.
