Darth Mauls Crimson Dawn Makes Its Bloody Return To Star Wars

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Star Wars: Bounty Hunters #13

Darth Maul’s Crimson Dawn has returned in the Star Wars galaxy, and cyborg bounty hunter Beilert Valance just got bloody proof that they’re back during the War of the Bounty Hunters crossover event. The latest issue of Marvel’s Star Wars: Bounty Hunters is naturally a tie-in story, seeing Valance seeking to save Han Solo from the hands of Boba Fett. However, Fett no longer has the infamous smuggler as he was stolen by none other than Crimson Dawn, the reborn crime syndicate who mark their return with a savage assassination right in front of Valance.

In War of the Bounty Hunters’ first issue, Boba Fett learned that his prize had been stolen by Crimson Dawn, the criminal enterprise first formed by the former Sith Lord Maul during the Clone Wars. Despite Maul having been dead for years by the time of this event, Crimson Dawn has returned under the command of Lady Qi’ra, who’s looking to make big moves using Solo, still trapped in his frozen carbonite prison after the events of Empire Strikes Back. However, due to Crimson Dawn’s long period of inactivity it makes sense that Valance would have his doubts of their current operations in Star Wars: Bounty Hunters #13 from Ethan Sacks and Paolo Villanelli.

Despite having an altercation with the Wookiee Chewbacca who told Valance not to go after Solo, the cyborg refuses to give up, owing Han an unspoken life debt for saving him when the pair were still cadets in the Imperial Academy. As a result, Valance soon finds a weapons dealer who claims that Solo is no longer with Fett, and is instead in the possession of the resurgent Crimson Dawn. While Valance has his doubts, the criminal syndicate soon provides him all the bloody proof he needs when they brutally assassinate the dealer who was just speaking to the mercilessness of Lady Qi’ra.

Now, the end of the issue sees Valance definitely believing that Crimson Dawn has returned, as one of their assassins now has her sights set on Valance and his temporary partner Dengar as well. Apparently, the clandestine organization doesn’t want anyone to know the full extent of their operations and power, seemingly relying on secrecy and mystery to make their potential rivals wary of crossing them. In any case, things do not look good for the two bounty hunters who are pinned down with minimal options for escape.

It certainly seems as though Valance and Dengar are going to have their hand full with this assassin in future issues, keeping them both busy while others go after Solo. As War of the Bounty Hunters continues, it’s going to be interesting to see how Boba Fett gets Solo back and delivered to Jabba’s Palace as seen in Return of the Jedi. It seems as though everyone in the galaxy wants Han Solo and Crimson Dawn knows it, hoping to use him as the ultimate bargaining chip to legitimize their return. In any case, here’s hoping Valance will be able to survive Crimson Dawn and somehow make good on his debt to Star Wars’ most infamous smuggler.
