DCEU Every Movie Ranked Smallest to Biggest Budget

Despite a few setbacks, the DC Extended Universe seems to still be going strong with Wonder Woman 1984 expected to debut in October and a bunch of films slated to be released in the coming years. Despite only having 8 films, the franchise has made several major investments in different projects, some that paid off and some that didn’t.

Each film costs different amounts to bring to audiences so here is a list of every DCEU movie, ranked from smallest to biggest budget.

8 Birds of Prey: $82M

The DCEU’s most recent film, Birds of Prey, had the lowest budget out of all of the films costing under $100 million which makes sense since the film featured a lot more street-level action with the only character with powers being Jurnee Smollett-Bell’s Black Canary. In addition to having the lowest budget, it also made the least amount of money at the box office only managing to earn $201,858,461 worldwide which many blame on the film’s poor marketing.

7 Shazam!: $85M

Coming off the surprising success of Aquaman, DC decided to stick with their new trend of hiring horror directors with David F. Sandberg helming the hero’s solo debut. Despite not making as much as some of the other DCEU films, it was the best received of the bunch with it receiving an audience score of 82% and a critics score of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes with many praising the films lighthearted and comedic tone.

6 Wonder Woman: $150M

Many fans were intrigued to see more of Gal Gadot as the iconic character after her introduction in Batman v. Superman, with her inclusion being one of the most praised things about the film despite having less than 10 minutes of screentime.

Her solo film would go on to be the biggest movie of summer 2017 beating both Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming, two extremely popular franchises, for that title. The film made a total of $821,847,012 making it the highest-grossing live-action film directed by a woman at the time.

5 Aquaman:$160M

For decades Aquaman has been seen as a joke so it’s interesting that it still remains as the highest-grossing film out of all the DC Extended Universe films. In addition to it being the first and, so far, only DCEU film to make over a billion dollars at the box office, it’s also the only DCEU movie to break into the top 10 highest-grossing movies list. Fans were obviously excited to see more of the character after seeing him in Justice League but not even WB could have predicted the success the film would achieve.

4 Suicide Squad: $175M

Suicide Squad was the 3rd film in the franchise and the DCEU’s first real team movie before Justice League. The film got a lot of attention for WB’s controversial decision to have the company that edited the trailer edit the entire movie which resulted in their being multiple versions of the film, including one that director, David Ayer, is still pushing to have released. Despite the all-star cast and the interesting concept, the film received mostly negative reception. However, the initial interest for the film was enough to help the film earn more than enough to be successful.

3 Man of Steel: $225M

Man of Steel was the first film of the DCEU which kicked off the entire franchise and introduced Henry Cavill as the new Superman.

Despite the mixed reception the film got from critics and fans alike, it went on to earn $667,999,518 at the box office, making it the highest-earning Superman movie of all time, which is an achievement in itself.

2 Batman v. Superman: $263M

DCEU Every Movie Ranked Smallest to Biggest Budget

Batman v. Superman was the second film in the DCEU. While the film did pretty well at the box office, pulling in $872.7 million, it was reported that WB was ultimately disappointed that it didn’t manage to easily bring in more and join the billion-dollar club like films such as Captain America: Civil War had, considering the film had featured the two most popular comic book characters.

1 Justice League: $300M

It’s not a surprise hear that Justice League is the highest budget film of the franchise when you think about the amount of special effects necessary, the cast’s pay, and the amount of additional work needing to be done on the project after Zack Snyder left and Joss Whedon took over. The changing of directors is what ultimately led to the film’s downfall resulting in the story becoming muddled. Making a movie about the most popular superhero team from the comics seemed like easy money but what should have easily been their most popular film turned out to be a spectacular failure. WB once again found themselves in a similar situation to when they released Batman v. Superman, losing around an estimated $65 Million as a result of the film which is pretty significant considering how well they initially expected it to perform.
