Doom Patrol Who Is Wally Sage (Comic Book History & Powers Explained)

Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Doom Patrol, season 3 episode 7, “Bird Patrol.”

The Doom Patrol season 3 episode “Bird Patrol” introduced Wally Sage, an obscure character with a unique set of powers and a direct link to Flex Mentallo in his comic book history. Doom Patrol is rightly recognized for having some of the most unusual heroes and villains in all the DC universe. Yet Wally Sage’s story and abilities are strange, even by the unorthodox standards of Doom Patrol, particularly in the original Doom Patrol comics written by Grant Morrison, who created both Wally Sage and Flex Mentallo.

The storyline of Doom Patrol season 3 spreads across time, with the team somewhat unwillingly joining forces with amnesiac time-traveler Laura De Mille (Michelle Gomez). Possessing the power of shapeshifting, De Mille sought out Niles Caulder to stop a group called the Sisterhood of Dada, whom the Doom Patrol tried (and failed) to confront. Eventually, it was revealed that Laura De Mille was a former member of the Sisterhood of Dada in the early 20th century and that the Sisterhood of Dada were in the midst of preparing for some event they dubbed the Eternal Flagellation.

It remains to be seen just what role Wally Sage will play in these events and if his connection to Flex Mentallo (who has yet to appear in Doom Patrol season 3) will be the same as in the comics. It seems highly unlikely that Sage would be introduced into the series, given his history in the comics, if there were no intention to tie him into Flex Mentallo’s background. On the other hand, nothing is truly unlikely in the chaotic world of Doom Patrol.

Who Is Wally Sage & What Are His Powers In The Comics?

Doom Patrol Who Is Wally Sage (Comic Book History & Powers Explained)

Wally Sage first appeared in Doom Patrol #38 (November 1990) as part of an apparent non sequitur story involving a college student who disappeared mysteriously after buying a pair of sugar tongs at a garage sale. Wally’s disappearance was later explained in Doom Patrol #44, where he was revealed to have been taken prisoner by the Men From NOWHERE, a secret department of the United States government charged with eliminating weirdness from the world. Wally was forced to use his imagination to create weapons for the Men From NOWHERE until he was rescued by the hero Flex Mentallo and used the last of his life force to restore the legendary superhero’s powers.

A different version of Wally Sage appeared in the 1996 Flex Mentallo miniseries. This Wally Sage was a rock star who spent the entire miniseries in a hallucinatory state brought on by suicidal depression and a mass of mixed narcotics. Sage spent most of the story rambling about the comics he loved as a kid and his own meager attempts at making comics before he got into music, as Flex Mentallo investigated the apparent breakdown of reality thanks to an unseen villain. In the end, the story revealed that Wally Sage was the villain responsible for tearing apart the universe with his own cynicism, in what was author Grant Morrison’s metaphor for how superhero fandom ruined comic books by overanalyzing them.

Both versions of Wally Sage are powerful psychics, capable of altering reality with a thought. The only limit to this power was apparently Wally’s considerable imagination. This was why the Men From NOWHERE were quick to put Wally to work in the Doom Patrol comics and why he proved to be Flex Mentallo’s worst enemy when his negative worldview got the better of him.

Wally Sage’s Ties To Flex Mentallo Explained

Doom Patrol Who Is Wally Sage (Comic Book History & Powers Explained)

Doom Patrol #44 revealed the true origins of Flex Mentallo, who had previously been said to have learned the secrets of Muscle Mystery from a book he got in the mail, though Doom Patrol season 1 leaves his origins ambiguous. The truth was that Flex was a character Wally Sage had created for a comic book he had drawn as a boy, whom he based on the character in a Charles Atlas advertisement promising to make anyone who sent away for his lessons into a man in just seven days. This was why Flex Mentallo had so few limits on his powers and resembled a living cartoon character in his combat boots and leopard-print trunks. Effectively, Flex was an imaginary friend brought to life, based on one boy’s image of what the ultimate hero should be, subconsciously brought to life to save him when he truly needed a hero.

How The Doom Patrol Show Changes Wally’s Story

Wally Sage was introduced into the reality of the Doom Patrol series in Doom Patrol season 3, episode 7, “Bird Patrol,” during a sequence set at the Bureau of Normalcy in 1949. Sage was a metahuman who applied to the Bureau for work, hoping to get a marketing position that he had seen advertised. However, he was taken before the Bureau’s Laura De Mille and put through a test of his powers. Sage demonstrated his ability, pulling an inflatable beach ball out of a comics page that had been among his personal papers. (In a nod to the original Doom Patrol comic where Wally Sage first appeared, the comic was drawn in green ballpoint pen ink.) This led to the gentle Sage being declared fit to be a metahuman weapon and enlisted in a Bureau of Normalcy military unit.

Sage appeared later in the episode, as Laura De Mille betrayed her friends in the Sisterhood of Dada, who had previously been excused from military operations due to their status as pacifists thanks to Laura’s working the system. Sadly, Laura decided her oath and her position were more important than her friends and their ideals and she was forced to reclassify them all metahuman weapons. Sage was the soldier who stepped in and accidentally shot the Sisterhood of Dada’s Malcolm in Doom Patrol when he refused to kneel as his friends had. Unfortunately, the taser bayonet on Sage’s gun went right through Malcolm’s chest, striking the canary that had replaced his heart. This killed Malcolm instantly and the unfortunate incident led to the heartbroken Sisterhood of Dada being enslaved by the American government for over 70 years and led to their recent efforts in Doom Patrol to get their revenge on Laura de Mille and the world.
