Elijah Wood Doesnt Know if a Lord of the Rings 20th Anniversary Reunion Will Happen

Elijah Wood doesn’t know if a 20th anniversary Lord of the Rings reunion will happen this year. The Fellowship of the Ring released in theaters 20 years ago, with its official anniversary December 19. The film kickstarted one of the most successful and critically acclaimed film trilogies of all time, with The Two Towers and The Return of the King released in 2002 and 2003, respectively. Each film would go on to gross more than the last at the box office and the franchise finished its run with Return of the King scoring the largest clean sweep at the 2004 Academy Awards, winning all nine Oscars it was nominated for. The film also ties Ben-Hur and Titanic for most Oscars won in a single night.

Peter Jackson would return to Middle Earth eight years after The Return of the King’s release, directing an adaptation of JRR Tokien’s The Hobbit. Jackson turned the novel into another trilogy, pulling in elements from The Silmarillion to create another expansive story in the same vein as the original trilogy. While not as well received as Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit films were still major successes, grossing $2.93 billion at the box office compared to the original trilogy’s $2.99 billion.

After years of remaining the model for high-profile fantasy adaptations, Frodo actor Elijah Wood said that he hopes to get together with his castmates soon to celebrate the trilogy’s 20th anniversary, but he’s unsure if that will happen. In a conversation with Looper, Wood said that it would be difficult to even get to New Zealand because of the ongoing pandemic. Still, the actor says that the cast does want to get together at some point and he also points out that they have at least two more 20th anniversaries to come. Check out his full quote below:

We’ve talked a bunch. There’s a lot of talk about a 20th anniversary gathering, but I don’t know if anything’s quite come together. It’s also difficult because of COVID. I don’t know that we could even get to New Zealand. In fact, I’m almost sure we couldn’t get to New Zealand unless there were some major permits and some sort of way in there, which I suppose is possible, but that country’s shut down. … It’s a tough time. This particular year is a little hard for a variety of reasons, which is a shame, because we do, and we have, over the years, and certainly over this last year, talked about wanting to do something. I suppose the one benefit is that we do have at least two more 20th anniversaries to celebrate, so that’s kind of nice. At least we have that.

I think there will absolutely be a gathering. I know we all want to celebrate together, and I think we want to be able to find a space that works for everybody. There are a lot of people who would love to sit down at a giant table and raise a glass to our experience, collectively, share stories and just hang out.

The chance to see the cast of Lord of the Rings reunite after twenty years is an enticing one. With Jackson filming all three movies back-to-back, the original Fellowship bonded on a level that few casts do. Additionally, the shoot was grueling at times, with the Helm’s Deep battle being a particularly rough sequence to shoot. Through all that, though, the cast was truly able to form connections that they have to this day and their legacy is still felt.

Lord of the Rings is largely responsible for the boon in fantasy content seen on streaming today. A show like Game of Thrones wouldn’t have existed without Jackson’s trilogy and now every streamer is clamoring for the next big fantasy hit. Amazon will go straight to source, adapting Tolkien’s work once again with one of the most expensive television shows ever made. Still, nothing will be able to live up to the original Lord of the Rings trilogy or the cast who defined the beloved characters.
