Emilio Estevez Won’t Return To The Mighty Ducks Game Changers Season 2

Actor Emilio Estevez won’t be returning to play Gordon Bombay in season 2 of The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers. Estevez first appeared as Coach Bombay in the 1992 film, The Mighty Ducks, and reprised the role in the 1994 and 1996 sequels. The beloved franchise revolves around a youth hockey team of misfits and underdogs, led by embattled lawyer-turned-coach, Gordon Bombay. The actor once again reappeared as Bombay in the 2021 Disney+ series, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, with Estevez breaking his long-held resistance to reboots, remakes, and reunions.

Developed by original Mighty Ducks scribe Steve Brill, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers catches up with the underdog hockey team, who in the years since D3: The Mighty Ducks, have become a slick, villainous force to be reckoned with. After being booted from the elite team, 12-year-old Evan resolves to start his own scrappy team at the behest of his mother, Alex. The series follows the new squad—called the Don’t Bothers—as they work to win the right to call themselves The Mighty Ducks. Along with Estevez, Game Changers stars Lauren Graham, Brady Noon, Maxwell Simkins, Swayam Bhatia, Julee Cerda, Luke Islam, Bella Higginbotham, Taegen Burns, Kiefer O’Reilly, and De’Jon Watts. Additionally, a number of original Mighty Ducks actors make cameo appearances.

Now, Deadline confirms that Estevez won’t be returning for The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers’ second season. The decision was made after a weeks-long back and forth debate with Estevez’s representation regarding the show’s COVID vaccination requirement. Although Estevez and his team declined to comment, the actor allegedly refused to comply with Disney Television Studios’ COVID policy. Sources close to Estevez claim he is leaving the project due to creative differences.

While a strict vaccine protocol isn’t the law of the land among Hollywood productions, required COVID vaccination has been included in many return-to-work agreements between studios and large unions. At Disney and numerous other studios, the vaccine mandate has become the industry standard in Zone A—actors and the crew members with whom they directly interact. Estevez reportedly declined to confirm that he would act in accordance with the policy.

Estevez’s departure comes as a surprise given his previous statements on COVID-19 safety protocols. In April, Estevez came out in support of Tom Cruise for berating crew members on the set of Mission: Impossible 7 for not complying with safety measures such as social distancing. Estevez asserted that such protocols were crucial on film sets and all of the surrounding service industries. It’s unclear, however, whether Estevez’s views on COVID safety extend to the application of vaccine mandates.

Estevez has also bristled at Disney’s handling of the latest Mighty Ducks series, suggesting that his departure could indeed stem from creative differences with the studio. Also in April of 2021, Estevez expressed ire towards Disney for refusing to address ongoing, real-world issues like systemic racism or the pandemic. While Estevez won’t be returning to The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, the rest of the cast has signed on to reappear in the now-Bombayless second season, which was ordered for renewal in August. If the show’s writers can work around the sudden absence of its star, filming is scheduled to begin in early 2022.
