Every Cat From Cats Sorted Into Hogwarts Houses

As one of the most storied musical theater productions in the history of everything, Cats has captured the minds of generations-worth of fans. It’s also a highly divisive production, with some believing that it has nothing even resembling a plot, while also never properly explaining what a Jellicle cat really is.

The divisiveness was not helped out by the addition of the Cats motion picture. Suffering some of the worst ratings imaginable, with glitches in the movie itself, there was plenty worth forgetting despite the dynamite cast.

Still, there are plenty of memorable characters from the story, whether you like the show or not, and therefore they must be properly sorted into Hogwarts Houses. Let’s get to it.

14 Mr. Mistoffelees—Ravenclaw

Mr. Mistoffelees has been depicted in multiple, diverse ways throughout the different reincarnations of Cats productions, but through it all, he always retains the same baseline of attributes that fit with how TS Eliot described him.

Through it all, he possesses incredible talent and intelligence, so much so that he doesn’t often know how to use it properly, as he’s still growing into his own abilities. With such a focus on intelligence and ability, as well as a pretty pronounced independence from the rest of the cats, he has to fit into Ravenclaw.

13 Jennyanydots—Gryffindor

Whether she knows it or not, Jennyanydots is absolutely a Gryffindor. Despite being a doting, loving, and caring motherly figure to all the other cats out there, she is also stern, focused, and determined in her role as a leader among the cats. If anyone falls out of line, she is quick to correct them and make things right, though she does so the way a good mother would, not the way, say, a Lucious Malfoy would.

Thus, with such leadership skills and dedication to what is right, she is very much a Molly Weasley type character.

12 Old Deuteronomy—Gryffindor

Old Deuteronomy is the old, lumbering leader of the Jellicle cat clan. He is universally loved by all the cats across all social groups and, let’s not beat around the bush, he is practically the cat version of Albus Dumbledore, who was also a Gryffindor. Thus Old Deuteronomy is a Gryffindor as well. Despite being old and slow, there’s no doubt that in his younger days, he was a noble, brave cat that did what was right for the good of his fellow felines.

11 Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer—Slytherin

The first two cats to land in Slytherin, both Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer both show some pretty obvious signs of coming from the house of Voldemort. They aren’t evil, by any means. All they ever really commit is petty theft, but they’re so good at it. They are quick and sharp-witted and while they commit the crimes that they do. They are generally accepted among most cats, though many see through the ruse of their good-nature and see them for what they are.

With such a facade of good nature and an underbelly of nefariousness, they are easy Slytherins.

10 Demeter—Hufflepuff

Demeter is not a very strong or forthright cat. She’s very anxious, very nervous, and it might have something to do with a past relationship with Macavity, devious soul that he is. Still, it’s left Demeter shaken and in need of protection, which is provided by her companion Bombalurina.

Still, despite being so reserved and unsure of herself, she is a caring cat who has early sympathy for Grizabella, which seems to be the gauge between Hufflepuff and just about everyone else.

9 Bombalurina—Gryffindor

Bombalurina comes across as rather arrogant and self-serving at times with her brash confidence and outspoken feelings towards all the other cats. But while that can seem disingenuous, and make her stand out in a negative light, her protectiveness over Demeter recenters her general aura so, at worst, she lands at a neutral morality.

As for her sortable traits—she’s confident and assertive but also protective and loyal. That makes her a prototypical Gryffindor.

8 Rum Tum Tugger—Slytherin

The rockstar of the Cats world, Rum Tum Tugger lives at center stage. He is arrogant and obsessed with his own ends and will happily shun other cats if they do not help further his goals. Yet even in spite all of this, he has a massive fan base that follows him around, despite the older cats not exactly being thrilled with his overall demeanor.

While he does have a wholesome underside, this still lands him in Slytherin, land of the arrogant and self-serving.

7 Skimbleshanks—Gryffindor

Most of the older cats find themselves in Gryffindor simply because they’ve taken on such a protectiveness of the younger cats. While that would push some into Hufflepuff, this protectiveness often requires a bravery and selflessness that can more often be found in Gryffindor.

Skimbleshanks is also the adult cat who “protects” the younger cats from Grizabella which, while misguided, shows his bravery in his willingness to guard them.

6 Munkustrap—Gryffindor

Munkustrap is yet another of the older cats and thus protectors of the younger, but if there were levels to the older cats’ “Gryffindordom,” Munkustrap would probably rank as the highest, since he isn’t just protective of certain groups, or of his particular family, but of the entire clan. In the absence of Old Deuteronomy, he is the leader of bunch. And that protectiveness and bravery especially comes front and center when he fights off Macavity to save Demeter. It’s the most Gryffindor act a cat can make.

5 Gus—Slytherin

Probably the hardest cat to place simply because he’s so old and, at least at the beginning, senile. He mumbles on about his time in the theater and the roles he has played and criticizes the younger cats for having no appreciation of the theater.

What lands him in Slytherin is the arrogance and idealism he shows towards what he used to be and how no one appreciates it. It’s a very Slytherin way to view the world.

4 Victoria—Ravenclaw

One of the few cats to find herself in Ravenclaw, Victoria gets there for two big reasons—of all the cats, she is one of the most shy and thus independent of the bunch. She is also very talented, but not boisterous about it.

She’s actually rather quiet and subdued about her own abilities, never bragging or flaunting it. And while she does have her collection of friends who she cares very much about, she is also just so focused on her own abilities that she can come across as a bit of a solo act. She is incredibly graceful, but her shyness is always accompanying.

3 Bustopher Jones—Slytherin

Bustopher Jones is the typical elitist. He takes extra special care to make sure he is always impeccably dressed and groomed and he makes it a point to enjoy the finer things in life, such as clothing and food.

But just because he’s so focused on himself doesn’t make him a slouch in the intelligence department. He’s quite a sharp cat, with a quick wit to boot. Even more Slytherin of him, however, is how quickly he scats when danger comes. He’s in it for himself and few others, no matter how friendly he may come across at times.

2 Macavity—Slytherin

Oh yeah, Macavity is obviously a Slytherin as Munkustrap is a Gryffindor. Probably even more so. Macavity is the Voldemort of cats, being so well-adapted to the life of a criminal that he never gets caught. He’s too good to get caught. When TS Eliot based the cat off of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Professor Moriarty, he created a memorable villain that can only fit in one house. Because villains literally only come out of one house.

He shows no regard for other cats, using them to meet his ends. Such is the case with Demeter. And off he goes again, never to be caught.

1 Grizabella—Ravenclaw

The subject of the entire musical (if you believe there is indeed a plot), Grizabella could only really fit into Ravenclaw. She is a survivor, cast out from the world and thus having to adapt and live on her own despite her past of being one of the most gifted and beautiful cats around.

In her old age, she is passed the point of stardom and just wants to be welcomed back into the tribe that has shunned her. Still, even in her age, her sharpness and intelligence is there to be seen. She has managed to survive all these years on her own, which is as Ravenclaw as it gets.
