Every Red Dead Revolver Character Mentioned In RDR2 & Red Dead Redemption

Red Dead Redemption’s 2010 release was planned as a spiritual successor to Rockstar’s 2004 title Red Dead Revolver. While there are certainly clear influences and game mechanics that originated in Red Dead Revolver that eventually became staples in the Red Dead Redemption series, such as Dead Eye Targeting, there are some Easter eggs and mentions of Red Dead Revolver characters in both Red Dead Redemption and Red Dead Redemption 2.

The most abundant references found in later titles are about the protagonist of Red Dead Revolver, Red Harlow. At the outset of the game, Nate Harlow (Red’s father) and his prospector partner Griff strike gold at Bear Mountain. Following this, Griff is captured by Mexican Army General Diego and betrays Nate to spare himself by revealing their cache of gold, leading to the murder of Nate and his family. Red, still a young boy, watches his parents’ deaths and vows to take revenge. The game then fast-forwards to a grown-up, bounty hunting Red, who goes on a quest to get back at his parents’ killers while making new allies along the way.

A post-Revolver Red Harlow could appear in RDR3, but given that Red’s story takes place earlier in the 1880s, this could present a timeline issue relative to the Red Dead Redemption games. Yet that didn’t stop Red and some of his allies and enemies from making appearances in a DLC pack for Red Dead Redemption’s online multiplayer. These playable characters included Red Harlow, Jack Swift, Buffalo Soldier, Shadow Wolf, Pig Josh, Annie Stoakes, Ugly Chris, and Mr. Kelley, and each came with voice lines and random dialogue pertaining to their Red Dead Revolver backgrounds.

The Legend Of Red Dead Redemption’s Red Harlow

Although evidence is somewhat scant, some fans think that Harlow is hiding in Red Dead Redemption 2, though more concrete references can be found in Red Dead Redemption by listening to fireside conversations in the wilderness.

As can be heard at one campsite, “Best shots in the country would head to Brimstone. Had a famous Brimstone quick-draw competition. They still talk about the time Red Harlow beat old Mr. Kelley.” This quote not only brings up the quick-draw competition Red participates in during Red Dead Revolver, but implies that perhaps the town of Brimstone isn’t too far from New Austin.

Additionally, an NPC at a campfire in Red Dead Redemption 2’s Hennigan’s Stead will say, “My brother… used to tell me stories about Red Harlow… Legendary bounty hunter bringing the savage outlaws of the frontier to justice. A man who watched his parents get murdered in front of him as a boy, but who uses that pain to become a better man, and ultimately to… wreak his vengeance.”

A specific mission involving Annie Stoakes’s bull-riding is also discussed by two people: “One time her ranch was attacked by fellas riding buffalo and damned if she didn’t see them off riding on a bull.” At the end of this story, the other person by the fire will say, “Blasphemy!”, insinuating that some folks in the Red Dead Redemption universe only see the events of Red Harlow in Red Dead Revolver as tall tales and gunslinger legends like those out of a wild western cowboy movie.

The games share some locations between them as well, such as Twin Rocks and Two Crows, the latter showcasing more character history in Red Dead Redemption 2. Located northwest of Lake Don Julio, the home Harlow grew up in still stands in Two Crows, though, tellingly, the house burnt down, in line with the events of Red Dead Revolver. There’s also a grave that looks similar to the spot where Red’s father was shot, and the skeleton of the infamous Donkey Lady can be found tied up to a well. While Red Dead Revolver may not be a direct prequel to Red Dead Redemption, its influences and references certainly allow the legend of Red Harlow to live on.
