The final trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald has arrived. The sequel to 2016’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, The Crimes of Grindelwald is the second chapter in J.K. Rowling’s five-part prequel/spinoff to her original Harry Potter saga. Like the first Fantastic Beasts, the sequel was directed by David Yates and scripted by Rowling herself. Meanwhile, on the other side of the camera, Eddie Redmayne reprised his role as Newt Scamander, the wayward magizoologist and protagonist of the series.

Redmayne is joined in The Crimes of Grindelwald by his Fantastic Beasts costars Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol and Dan Fogler as the U.S. wizarding sisters Tina and Queenie Goldstein and the “No-Maj” Jacob Kowalski, respectively. The sequel further brings back Johnny Depp as the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald and introduces Jude Law as a young(er) version of Albus Dumbledore. However, those anticipating a Grindelwald and Dumbledore battle in the film will have to put those hopes on hold – as Law has confirmed that he and Depp don’t share any scenes in the film.

Both The Crimes of Grindelwald teaser trailer and July’s San Diego Comic-Con trailer shone the spotlight on Grindelwald’s escape from MACUSA custody in the film, as well as Dumbledore’s efforts to stem his former flame’s rise to power by recruiting Newt to the cause. However, as the final trailer calls attention to, there’s a lot more going on here than “just” that. Most notably, Credence Barebone (Ezra Miller) is still alive and is now being hunted by Yusuf Kama (William Nadylam), a wizard determined to find Credence and, more importantly, his Obscurus. Tina is also searching for Credence in the film and her investigation takes her to Paris – thus setting her on a collision course with Newt, who himself is carrying out a top secret mission for Dumbledore in the city.

With all this cloak and dagger business going on, it’s no surprise that The Crimes of Grindelwald comes off feeling like more of a thriller than its predecessor, as far as its trailers go. The sequel will also dive deeper into Newt’s past by introducing Zoë Kravitz as Leta Lestrange and revisiting her time with Newt, back when they were students at Hogwarts together. While The Crimes of Grindelwald promises to be a more exciting and emotional Wizarding World adventure thanks to these elements, this also means that the beloved “Fantastic Beasts” from the first movie will get less screen time to themselves in the sequel. Still, that might yet prove to be necessary for the purposes of the larger story that Rowling is telling here.

For their part, general audiences are currently ranking Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald as their most anticipated fall movie release, even ahead of films like Venom and Ralph Breaks the Internet. That certainly ought to come as welcome news to WB, seeing as they’ve still got three more sequels planned after this one. If nothing else, this final trailer should keep the fans buzzing about Newt’s next big move over the months that remain before its arrival.
