Led by a hysterical performance by Ryan Reynolds, the box office hit Free Guy is full of extremely funny, quirky, and offbeat characters living in both the real world and the gaming world of Free City. While Guy’s childlike naivety is the source of much of the laughter, characters like his best friend Buddy (Lil Rel Howery) and love interest Millie AKA Molotov Girl (Jodie Comer) have their own brand of side-splitting humor.

As Free Guy looks to repeat atop the box office for the third week in a row, it’s worth reminiscing over some of the film’s biggest laughs, and which character inspired them.

9 Missy The Barista

While Missy isn’t quite a main character, her memorable presence in the film as the NPC barista proved that AIs in the game could evolve and learn from their mistakes. Her interaction with Guy as he orders a cappuccino is a hilarious introduction to their character as she awkwardly glitches but maintains a polite facade and a plastic smile.

Granted, most of the humor comes from Guy’s side of the exchange, but Missy’s character is a funny way to introduce the various capabilities of the NPCs, with Missy being more dimensional than almost all of them except Guy and Buddy.

8 Keith

As the jaded, sardonic 22-year-old gamer behind the Revenjamin Button game, Keith (Matty Cardarople) making fun of the open-world gaming culture provides plenty of laughter in the film, especially when controlling his in-game avatar played by Channing Tatum in one of the best movie cameos. His bratty interactions with his mother (“that’s my special sock!”) and increasing immaturity in the guise of Tatum induce genuine laughs.

By playing and poking fun at a stereotypical gamer living in a fantasy world who wants to escape their existence through an improved fictional avatar, the humor Keith shows also has a social salience that makes the character more important than he appears on the surface.

7 Walter “Keys” McKeys

Stranger Things star Joe Keery plays Walter “Keys” McKeys in the film, a coder in a moral bind between Antwan and Millie. In the real world, Keys is pretty straitlaced, but in Free City, the mustachioed security guard fires a few funny zingers and one-liners to go with his amusing physical appearance.

Keys has one of the absolute funniest moments in the film when Guy is explaining his naturally dewy skin, to which a disgusted Keys barks out “Listen up Neutrogena! You know you can’t go around looking like that. The rules are clear.” Between lines like that and his droll interplay with Millie in the real world, Keys is more than mildly funny.

6 Antwan

Perhaps not as funny as some of Taika Waititi’s past characters, his role as the greedy Free City game developer Antwan has some hilarious scene-chewing moments in the film, many of which feel like improvised jokes made on the spot.

Designed as a flamboyantly villainous caricature, Antwan is so histrionic and theatrical in the way he screams, yells orders to his minions, and makes obnoxiously bad dad jokes that viewers can’t help but chuckle at how preposterously over-the-top he remains throughout. For instance, at one point Antwan breaks into the hilarious impromptu rap freestyle “I’m a rule breaker. I’m a rattle-chicka-chicka-chicka snaker.”

5 Millie/Molotov Girl

Aside from being the smartest character and the emotional core of the film (along with Buddy), Millie’s sense of humor opposes Guy’s in a way that makes them an ideal couple. While Guy is blissfully ignorant, Millie and her gaming alter ego Molotov Girl are extremely sarcastic and self-aware. The counterbalance between the two makes for a really amusing relationship.

The way Molotov Girl gives Guy a hard time with such lines as “enjoy your lifetime supply of virginity” and “Is that a Glock in your pocket” is perfectly balanced with Millie’s self-aware quotes like “don’t crib your jokes from the trolls in Free City.” Moreover, the way breakout star Jodie Comer waggishly delivers her lines makes them even funnier.

4 Dude

Perhaps the funniest line in the entire film comes when Dude, the hulking avatar Guy finds himself attached to, monotonously declares that “I can bench press a sentence.” Moreover, the deadpan look on Ryan Reynolds’ face as it is superimposed on the body of bodybuilder Aaron W. Reed is among the most hysterical moments in the movie.

The sheer absurdity of the muscle-bound caricature who utters such generic lines as “Catchphrase!” whenever he does something of note, and his ridiculous checklist of things he loves in life (kicking a**, TBD, and insert third thing here), conjures uproarious laughter in theaters when he’s on screen.

3 Buddy

It’s no surprise that stand-up comedian Lil Rel Howery has one of the funniest roles as Buddy. What is somewhat unexpected is how much heart the character brings to the overall story as Guy’s loving best friend and the second-most complex NPC in the game.

With perfect comedic timing, Buddy fires some of the funniest quips in the film, including when he and Guy stumble on a prone victim on the street and Guy says “he’s resting”, to which Buddy responds by saying “In pieces! That man is dead!” It’s one of the biggest laugh-out-loud moments in the movie. But what really makes Buddy’s humor resonate is how much he cares for Guy.

2 Mouser

In addition to Jodie Comer, Utkarsh Ambudkar is the second biggest breakout star as Mouser, the funniest and best character other than Guy in the film. Armed with the most biting one-liners in the whole movie, Mouser is responsible for some of the biggest laughs as the low-key villain.

Some of Mouser’s most hilarious lines include “Hey 40-year-old virgin, get over here!”, “Captain Khakis, get over here!”, and “you’re absolutely right. That story sounds long and boring and reeks of white privilege.” While Mouser delivers these lines with a mean edginess, the subversion of Indian-American stereotypes is extremely funny.

1 Guy

As a tailor-made star vehicle for Ryan Reynolds’ snarky brand of humor, it’s no surprise that Guy is the funniest character in the film. The deadpan delivery and innocent gullibility of a character that is so far in over his head provides an endless source of fish-out-water jokes, sight gags, crude innuendos, and hysterically vivid metaphors.

With such hilarious quotes as “it’s like I lost my virginity, but in my mouth” and “it’s like my tongue had a baby with a sunset”, Guy has a poetic way with words that underscore the absurdity of an NPC video game character. Beyond the quotes, it’s Reynolds’ brilliant facial reactions throughout the film that gives Guy a perfect combination of physical and verbal comedy.
