Brienne of Tarth was one of the most beloved characters on Game of Thrones. At times, she was both underrated and overrated for her role on the show.

Despite being introduced as a supporting character in Season 2, Brienne of Tarth quickly emerged as one of the most popular characters in HBO’s Game of Thrones, and was made a regular cast member by Season 4. Fans were fascinated by her commitment to serve as a knight, despite the fact that there was no precedent for women holding the position in all the Seven Kingdoms. She was loyal to a fault and driven by honor, and while she was sometimes deceived by the political machinations of those around her, her valor helped her prevail where others could not.

Brienne only became a problematic character when it seemed that she was constantly in the right place at the right time to take advantage of fortuitous events and situations, or when she preached honor and loyalty to the Starks and then promptly got in bed (pun intended) with the Lannisters. Whether fans found her overrated or underrated, in a world of dozens of fascinating characters her arc was no less entertaining.

10 OVERRATED: WHEN SHE FAILED TO PROTECT SANSA

Brienne made a pledge to Catelyn Stark to protect her daughters, but she seemed more concerned with Arya than with Sansa, who in some ways needed more help and looking out for than her younger sister.

She failed to protect Sansa at the Inn and was unable to convince her of the oleaginous ways of Petyr Baelish. Littlefinger was a known agitator, whose reputation Brienne knew well, and she should have had the sense to approach Sansa alone where he couldn’t influence her decision.

9 UNDERRATED: WHEN SHE REMINDED EVERYONE WOMEN COULD FIGHT

Prior to taking up her sword, Brienne had attempted to epitomize the feminine traits so expected of her gender but was met with mockery and disdain. When she chose a vocation more suited for her size and talents, she was met with repugnance and rejection.

She once told Catelyn Stark, “You don’t feel so helpless when you fight…When you’re armored it’s hard for anyone to hurt you”. And when she was reminded that,”knights die in battle”, she replied, “As ladies die in childbed. No one sings songs about them”. Brienne proved time and again how important it was for women to be the change they wanted to see in the Seven Kingdoms.

8 OVERRATED: WHEN SHE BULLIED PODRICK

It was an unfortunate aspect of Brienne’s personality that she so readily gave to judgment against another she deemed inferior. Podrick wanted nothing more than to be her page and she treated him like the dirt beneath her boots.

Brienne knew what it was like to be ridiculed, and for wanting something so desperately that she’d put up with anything to attain her goal. The worst thing was that Podrick did nothing but treat her with respect, and viewed her as the knight she was reluctant to embody with confidence.

7 UNDERRATED: WHEN SHE DEFEATED THE HOUND

One of the most exciting moments in the entire series was when Brienne took on The Hound, in an epic duel culminating in her being able to finally fulfill her promise to Catelyn Stark and bring Arya under her protection.

It was the truest display of Brienne’s abilities, considering The Hound was a fearsome swordsman and a physically powerful man. That she was able to not only hold her own against him but mortally wound him put her swordsmanship beyond repute.

6 OVERRATED: WHEN SHE STOPPED CALLING JAIME OUT

One of the best parts about Jaime and Brienne’s relationship was the fact that they were equals, in intellect, spirit, and fighting skills. She regularly challenged his notion of honor, and he appreciated having a standard to live up to when he’d come to surpass so many others in his league.

By the end of the series, she’d ceased to call Jaime out on his nefarious behavior, such as going back to Cersei after the Wildfire situation. She became sycophantic in a way that betrayed her character development.

5 UNDERRATED: WHEN SHE REUNITED SANSA WITH JON

Though some viewers found fault with the fact that it seemed like Brienne and Podrick simply “bumped into” Sansa at two different times by accident, rather than through their diligent tracking, the end result of their encounter was the same.

Brienne was responsible for getting Sansa and Jon Snow reunited. She fulfilled her oath to Catelyn Stark, and though Arya decided to find her own way, she set out what she intended to do despite every obstacle.

4 OVERRATED: WHEN SHE LET ARYA GET AWAY

After battling The Hound and proving victorious, Brienne was supposed to take Arya under her protection as per her orders from Catelyn Stark. Unfortunately, Arya had other plans and left her to find her own way in Westeros.

Brienne failed to effectively communicate to Arya her sincerity, showing up in armor given to her by Jaime Lannister, as well as brandishing Oathkeeper. Arya didn’t trust her, and with good reason, since for all she knew Brienne was a Lannister agent.

3 UNDERRATED: WHEN SHE KILLED STANNIS

Stannis Baratheon was a cold-blooded killer who would stop at nothing to claim the Iron Throne, even if it meant siding with a seductive and murdering witch. He killed his own daughter at the Red Woman’s bidding, and he was a brilliant strategist, so whoever was able to best him would have to be a formidable opponent.

Brienne marched straight across the battlefield at the Battle of the Bastards and killed him without so much as an afterthought. She then went on to stop Melisandre and Davos mid-conversation to announce what she’d done in a legendary display of steely effrontery.

2 OVERRATED: WHEN SHE FAILED TO PROTECT RENLY

Brienne pledged herself to two people whom she couldn’t protect, and who both died under duplicitous circumstances. Though there was nothing she could have done for either of them, her announcing her loyalty to them after they’d died showed a level of tactlessness.

Her sense of honor and duty often made her look less astute than other characters, especially since it meant she seemed incapable of comprehending the intricacies of the political games going on around her – i.e., Renly wasn’t killed by a “shadow” as she claimed, but an assassin sent by Stannis Baratheon.

1 UNDERRATED: WHEN SHE GOT JAIME

At several inches over six feet tall, broad-shouldered, and with an indelicate bearing, Brienne was a woman who was never expected to get the attention of a man like Jaime Lannister. She fell in love with him and thought her feelings would go unrequited, until Season 8.

Brienne winning Jaime’s affections was a significant moment for her, because it proved that she didn’t have to sacrifice what was important to her just to be seen as less threatening by a man. He found her desirable as she was, and his feelings weren’t conditional.
