Hammed Animashaun Interview Wheel Of Times Loial

Hammed Animashaun plays Loial in The Wheel of Time. Rand and Mat first encounter Loial in Tar Valon in The Wheel of Time episode 5, but the Ogier has a major role to play in the events of the series. At the end of The Wheel of Time episode 6, Loial is ready to lead Moiraine, Lan, and the Emond’s Field Five into the Ways, a dangerous method of travel that could alter the course of their journey.

Screen Rant sat down with Hammed Animashaun to talk about his Wheel of Time debut, what the make-up process was like, and what’s in store for the final two episodes of season 1.

Screen Rant: With Loial being mostly practical effects, can you walk me through how you get ready for your scenes and how much time you spend in the make-up chair?

Hammed Animashaun: We tried a whole bunch of different faces. It sounds so weird, but we tried a whole bunch of different faces of what could fit for me so that I can move my face as much as possible. Because it is mostly my face. So I have to be able to connect to it myself.

So at the start, it was something like maybe four and a half hours, maybe five. We’ve managed to get it down to two and a half hours now. So it’s actually not that crazy. It’s actually not that bad. I mean, the team is incredible. It’s definitely a team effort.

How did everyone react when they first saw you on set in full make-up?

Hammed Animashaun: It was funny because when I was walking around the studio, all I got was people staring. Because in costume, I’m pretty tall and I have a bodysuit on so my shoulders come out about here. So everything is just magnified. And I was the first non-human talking character. So walking around the studio in full costume – a lot of stares, a lot of astonishment. But that’s a good thing. It meant that that the VFX team did their job. I was really pleased and I think everyone was really excited when I first stepped on set. I was really excited. It was a really good time. Great memories.

Loial is a major character in the books and I’m assuming he’s going to be a major character for the show. How did you prepare to take on this role?

Hammed Animashaun: Yeah, it’s funny, I didn’t know much about The Wheel of Time when I first was introduced to it. Obviously, like most people, I Googled it and I realized just how epic this adventure is and this story is, and this world. I was trying so hard not to panic because one of the other things that I read online was that Loial is one of the fan favorites. So you can’t help but feel a little bit of pressure as an actor. You want to do a good job, you always want to do a good job to appease not just [yourself] but the people who have grown up with the books.

I think for me, it was just about finding the right tone for Loial. So just a lot of research about him, a lot of research about the Ogier in general, just to get that right. Just to get the tone and the pitch right, if that makes sense. The melody of Loial, I wanted to get right.

Your introduction in the show is a little bit different than it is in The Eye of the World. Instead of Caemlyn, we meet Loial in Tar Valon and they built a lot of that set for the show. What was that like?

Hammed Animashaun: I’m always shocked and astonished by some of the stuff that the theater world can do on stage and then walking into pretty much like a real city – I was shocked, to say the least. I was just stunned by just the amount of attention to detail that this place had. These guys over in Prague, they’ve worked so hard to bring these places and to bring these characters to life. I’m just in awe of every single one of them.

Walking onto Tar Valon for the first time was one of those things I don’t think I’ll ever forget. It was just very special for all of us. It’s just one of those things I don’t think will ever be replicated. One of the top moments of my career.

At the end of The Wheel of Time episode 6, we see Loial get ready to lead the group into the Ways. Can you talk a little bit about that set and atmosphere? It’s one of the most extreme locations we’re going to get in this season.

Hammed Animashaun: It was a very intense shoot, shooting stuff in the Ways. I don’t want to say too much, because I don’t want to give too much away. But it was one of those moments where it felt so real. For all of us in there, we didn’t really have to work so hard because of the work of everyone else. It felt so real. [It will be] another special moment for episode 7 when you see everyone in the Ways. It’s a special little bit, it’s wicked. You’re in for a treat. I can tell you that.

Is there anything you can tease about The Wheel of Time season 2? Do we get to see more Ogiers or their Stedding?

Hammed Animashaun: I can tell you that season 2 is bigger. Just more incredible performances.

How has the fan reaction made you feel? Everyone’s loving it and it’s Amazon’s biggest series of 2021.

Hammed Animashaun: It was such a long time. So much has happened. COVID was such a big thing that happened to us, it just brought us closer together. We knew that we had to not only complete this for ourselves as much for everyone who’s waiting. We really had to pull our socks up and really get to work. It’s been two years of hard work and dedication – literally blood, sweat, and tears to get to this point. So to get the reaction and the response that we’re getting is just – none of us really knew what to expect when the show was eventually going to come out.

To get this sort of response, it’s just been incredible. For me, personally, I can’t speak for everyone else, but for me personally, the response has been something I’ve like I’ve never experienced before. So I’m just really pleased that people are really taken by the series. Not just book readers, but non-book readers as well. My younger brother never read the books and now he’s calling me every day asking me to get him the book. Get me out of work. It’s just amazing. The response is great.

Loial has a special relationship with Rand in the books. Will we get to see that fleshed out in the show?

Hammed Animashaun: Josha [Stradowski] is just one of those actors that you want to work with all the time. He’s the perfect person to work alongside and the relationship between Loial and Rand in the books is obviously very special. [But] it’s more about the relationship with not just Rand, but Loial’s relationship with everyone because he travels with everyone in season one. It’s more about how he gets on with just people, rather than just like one central person. It’s exciting. I’m really excited for you to see the stuff that gets up to the rest of the team.
