2020 was an unfortunate year for both moviegoers, who were unable to go to the theatres due to the pandemic, and movie producers, as countless projects had to be shut down mid-production. Not many films from high-profile directors were released, and those which were, such as Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, failed to create much of a buzz and flopped at the box office for obvious reasons. But the near future is shaping up to be a much exciting time, granted that no other secondary disasters strike and that the release dates stay the same as they are.

Movies from some of Hollywood’s biggest players such as Steven Spielberg and Ridley Scott will be releasing towards the end of 2021, while a new Martin Scorsese film hovers on the horizon. The list below names the best films coming from the best directors that people should definitely keep their eyes on.

10 Cry Macho: Clint Eastwood

Author N. Richard Nash originally wrote Cry Macho as a screenplay for a movie but later novelized it in 1975, and since then several attempts have been made to make it into a movie, with Arnold Schwarzenegger being associated with the project at one time.

Having won Oscars for both acting and directing, few people can boast of a career as impressive as that of Clint Eastwood, and his age doesn’t seem to be stopping him at all. He’ll be directing and starring in this story about a former rodeo star who is handed the responsibility to escort a young boy traveling from Mexico to Texas.

9 Old: M. Night Shyamalan

It’s difficult to look forward to M. Night Shyamalan’s films considering how it’s always a hit and miss with him. On one hand, he has directed some well-acclaimed thrillers like Split and The Sixth Sense. On the other hand, though, there is The Last Airbender with a 5% rating.

Old will follow a group of people on vacation at a beach where they realize that some supernatural phenomenon is aging them at a horrifying rate, turning even children into full-grown adults.

8 No Sudden Move: Steven Soderbergh

Crime movies with large casts are exactly what put Steven Soderbergh on the map, namely the classic heist film Ocean’s Eleven and its two sequels.

Set in the mid-1900s, No Sudden Move will revolve around a group of criminals who are brought together by a mysterious third party to steal a simple item but get entangled in a more complex plot instead. It will feature an ensemble cast of Hollywood stars including Don Cheadle, David Harbour, Jon Hamm, and Brendan Fraser.

7 Dun: Denis Villeneuve

Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel Dune is considered by many to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest of all-time works of science-fiction ever written that has influenced fiction literature in more ways than it is possible to measure.

It’s an epic narrative of an interstellar society that precedes and goes beyond the likes of Star Wars, and the upcoming film certainly has some serious expectations to fulfill for millions of fans. Hopefully, Denis Villeneuve will demonstrate the same level of skill as he did in Arrival and Blade Runner 2049.

6 Nightmare Alley: Guillermo Del Toro

Written by author William Lindsay Gresham, Nightmare Alley tells the story of Stan Carlisle, a carnival worker with a talent for reading and manipulating people, and his relationship with his psychologist, an even more sinister character.

This isn’t the first time the book is getting a film, as a 1947 adaptation from director Edmund Goulding already exists, although, with Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, and Willem Dafoe involved, this upcoming one boasts of a far more impressive cast. Del Toro is also making an animated Pinocchio film for Netflix, a retelling of the classic fairy tale.

5 The Killer: David Fincher

From Se7en to Zodiac to Gone Girl, David Fincher’s thrillers have defined the genre in every decade, and judging from the name at least, audiences are in for a similar ride to what he has created before. Fincher’s correspondence with Netflix goes as far back as House of Cards and his recent Oscar-nominated film Mank was also from Netflix.

The Killer, based on the detective-noir French comic book series about a certain assassin, will be their fifth collaboration, with possibly more to come as he recently signed a deal with the company.

4 The Tragedy Of Macbeth: Joel Coen

William Shakespeares’ plays are each more legendarily famous than the other, and almost all of them have been adapted into various kinds of media from TV shows to movies to comics at some point or other. The Tragedy Of Macbeth, an eternal tale of a man’s rise to power and his fall from grace because of it, is one of his most famous works.

The Coen brothers are one of the best-known director duos in the industry, but surprisingly, and for the first time in their professional history, they will not be working together on a project.

3 West Side Story: Steven Spielberg

From war dramas to sci-fi, over the course of his prestigious career as one of the most influential directors in Hollywood Steven Spielberg has worked in all kinds of creative genres. Now it’s time for him to set foot into the realm of musicals, with this adaptation of the 1957 Broadway musical West Side Story.

Something of a modern-day retelling of the classic story of Romeo and Juliet (which was an inspiration for this play), it is about two teenagers in 1950s New York who fall in love but are forced to stay apart as they are part of rival gangs.

2 Killers Of The Flower Moon: Martin Scorsese

Some of Martin Scorcese’s best films were produced through his frequent collaborations with actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, and the fact that the three of them are finally doing a film together is definitely a cause worthy of anticipation.

Based on the non-fiction book of the same name by author David Grann, the film will explore a series of murders that took place in the early 1920s of a group of Native Americans known as the Osage Nation. With a budget of $200 million, it will be one of Scorcese’s most expensive films to date.

1 House Of Gucci: Ridley Scott

Gucci may not seem like anything other than a luxury fashion brand on the surface, but under all those overpriced leather product catalogs is a tale of murder and mystery waiting to be told, and Ridley Scott is here to tell it. He is best known for his sci-fi films such as Alien and The Martian, but crime dramas are no stranger to him either, as seen in American Gangster.

Pop singer Lady Gaga will be playing Patrizia Reggiani, the ex-wife of Maurizio Gucci, who was once the head of the Gucci company and the grandson of its founder. Reggiani hired a hitman to kill her husband, and the film will focus on that event and its consequences.
