How Long Does It Take to Beat & Complete Citizen Sleeper

Jump Over The Age’s latest survival RPG Citizen Sleeper has caused significant waves in the indie circuit as of late. Blending themes from Blade Runner with the text-based mechanics of Disco Elysium, Citizen Sleeper is bringing high-concept sci-fi roleplaying to the mainstream with style and substance.

Citizen Sleeper puts players in the shoes of a Sleeper, a sort of synthetic humanoid tasked with working off the labor of a human being who owes a debt to a large corporation. In transferring their consciousness to the Sleeper, humans can pay their dues to these companies by lying in stasis and having their Sleepers undertake the backbreaking labor required to settle the score. Discontent with this, the player’s Sleeper is tasked with escaping their drudgery and forging their own path on the lawless abandoned space station on which they find themselves.

Citizen Sleeper uses a daily action schedule format, with players choosing how to spend their time by rolling a number of classic six-sided dice whose values can then be assigned to certain rewards, penalties and actions. Players are tasked with guiding their Sleeper through a dystopian capitalist cityscape as they attempt to flee the misery of manual labor and brutal oppression at the hands of their masters. As it’s a relatively small indie title worked on by very few developers, don’t expect Citizen Sleeper to be the sort of enormous time sponge that games like Elden Ring have forged a reputation for being.

According to HowLongtoBeat, the average player will finish Citizen Sleeper’s main story in around 5 hours and 40 minutes, with faster players managing to get things done in around 5 hours and 20 minutes. Those who take a more leisurely approach will only add around 20 minutes to the average finishing time, increasing their times up to around 6 hours. Those wishing to complete the main story plus extras tend to finish in an average of 8 hours. Faster operators can bring this down to just under 6 hours.

As it’s an RPG, playtimes will inevitably vary, and the presence of dice-based outcomes will potentially aid or hinder players’ progress throughout the game. That being said, the time it takes to actually beat the game doesn’t vary much at all, and simply completing Citizen Sleeper’s main story isn’t likely to take up too much time.

Simply beating Citizen Sleeper’s main story doesn’t give players the full picture. The game has various requirements that must be completed in order for players to attain a 100 percent completion record. These include completing every pathway and achievement as well as unlocking all eight of the game’s endings, which vary depending on the choices made throughout the narrative. This can bump up playtimes considerably, as can the game’s clock mechanic wherein actions only fully resolve once the clock progresses sufficiently depending on the numbers rolled.

The average completionist time for Citizen Sleeper comes in at a little under 10 hours, while rushed players can get this down to just under 9 hours. Those taking their time seem to spend roughly 11 hours when trying to complete the whole game.

Considering the fact that Citizen Sleeper is a relatively modest indie release and has only been out on the market since May 5, the number of players polled by HowLongtoBeat remains low. As such, playtimes may be subject to change as sample sizes increase. Also, 68 percent of samples are taken from the PC, while 32 percent are from the Xbox Series X|S.

It’s also worth pointing out that players don’t need to, and can’t, follow every questline in a single playthrough. The game’s branching pathways regarding alliances, decisions, choices and completion of stories and activities mean that Citizen Sleeper practically has to be replayed for everything to be achieved and explored, as endings will change depending on who players betray or ally themselves with and the order in which they performed quests.
