How to Unlock The Emerald Weapon Trial in Final Fantasy XIV

The latest patch to Final Fantasy XIV has just released and it contains all sorts of new features. This includes new storyline quests, dungeons, and many changes to existing jobs. Not only are some characters gaining small buffs, other jobs like the Monk have been completely reworked with new mechanics. This should come as a welcome surprise to all the players returning for the 5.4 patch or have been enticed by the expanded free trial allowing unlimited play and all of the Heavensward expansion.

A fight that is sure to entice many Final Fantasy fans is Emerald Weapon, based on the optional mega boss from Final Fantasy VII. The Imperial Warmachina version of the legendary foe has a few keen differences, though. In Final Fantasy XIV, Weapons are not autonomous creatures but instead mechs that require a pilot. This means that players are not just fighting a monster, but often have to deal with phases against the actual driver of the machine. Those that manage to make it through the Normal mode of Emerald Weapon will also have a chance to take on the Extreme version. This will drop new main hand gear for all of the combat-related jobs.

How to Unlock The Emerald Weapon Trial in Final Fantasy XIV

Emerald Weapon serves as the third part of the Sorrows of Werlyt sub-questline. Players will already need to be level 80 and have finished the main storyline up until the quest Shadowbringers. Players will be able to now go through the post-expansion story content of patches 5.1 and 5.2, concluding in the quest Old Enemies, New Threats. Afterward, players can head to the Lochs X:36, Y:32 to find the Resistance Officer. He will issue two quests to combat the Imperial’s Weapons. This includes an eight-man trial against Ruby Weapon in Ruby Doomsday and a solo trial versus Sapphire Weapon in Sleep Now in Sapphire. Once both of these are completed, the Resistance Officer will have a new challenge in the form of Blood of Emerald.

Defeating Emerald Weapon in Final Fantasy XIV

To enter Castrum Marinum a full party of level 80s with minimum item level 485 gear is needed. Party composition is the standard two tanks, two healers, and four DPS; though full pre-made parties can defy this requirement. Emerald Weapon uses a tankbuster in the form of Emerald Shot, which tanks will need to use cooldowns to mitigate. It also does raid-wide damage via Optimized Ultima. Emerald Beam will be the more surprising attack, with it using a rotating cone area of effects on each of its sides, but also simultaneously donut-zone area of effects common in the YoRHa Dark Apocalypse series (Nier raid). This means that players will not only need to run around the boss but also strafe closer or further out at the same time. Melee and Black Mages may have a tough time maintaining damage during this dodging scramble.

Another attack to keep in mind is Magitek Magnetism. This creates three bombs with the familiar magnetism effect seen since Heavensward. The same polarity will push the bombs apart, different polarity will bring them together, requiring players to position away from the end result. The boss borrows further Heavensward attacks, like Sidescathe which unleashes damage across one half of the arena based on the boss’ animation (Calofisteri’s Haircut) and Fastblade a blue marker that pushes back (Sephirot’s Pillar of Mercy). The boss also has Split, which will place six pairs of hands at the outside of the arena. They will each unleash an orb that will briefly merge in the center before continuing to the other edge. Simply stand between them once gaps reform.

Second Phase

Emerald Weapon’s health will go down quickly, but the fight isn’t nearly that easy. After depleting its health the Weapon will change arenas, have a new form, and be back at full health. The outside edges will be on fire, causing instant death to anyone who touches them. Its main attack will be Divide et Impera which hits the tank hard and sends out cone-shaped attacks across the rest of the field.

Primus Terminus Est will mark three players for pushback and place circle damage indicators on the opposite end of the arena. Marked players will need to run to the edge where the push marker starts to avoid being knocked into the instant death fire. Also avoid other players, especially their fellow marked players as the push backs themselves can stack damage. With Secundus Terminus Est all players will be marked with either T-shaped or X-shaped line attacks. The initial impact does some damage, so don’t directly stack. However, players will need to make a formation close enough that free space is left open to dodge the upcoming line burst. Sprint, Rescue, Elusive Jump, Skukuchi, and other movement abilities may be needed if teammates place the area effect markers incorrectly. Tetrus Terminus Est will drop down six sword attacks, staggered in pairs of two each. Much like Titan and other spaced out attacks, purposely stand on the third set, wait for the first set to detonate, then move to where the first previously was to avoid the second and third.

Eventually, Emerald Weapon will transform into the Black Wolf’s Image and fight like a spruced up version of Gaius from A Realm Reborn, but mostly rely on auto-attacks. He will summon a legion of soldiers to fire from outside the arena. These soldiers will line up in three rows and eight columns. However, there won’t be enough to fill in all 24 spaces. Stand in whichever column lacks soldiers in the first row, wait for them to open fire, then run to another column without soldiers in the second row, wait again, and repeat the column switch for the third row. Defeating the Black Wolf’s Image will deal massive damage to Emerald Weapon and force it back to its second form.

While there is no initial reward for defeating Emerald Weapon Normal mode, it does open up the option of facing off against his Extreme counterpart. This battle is much harder but rewards item level 515 weapons. These are weaker than Tomestone and Eden raid weapons, it will serve as a good in-between for players catching up or playing alternate jobs.
