Jean-Claude Van Damme’s legacy as an action star remains intact thanks to his incredible films in the ’80s, 90s, and early 2000s. The Belgian actor’s characters were more fond of kicks and punches than guns. This is thanks to his martial arts background.

The actor was also a bodybuilder during his early years. His work earned him the Mr. Belgium title. But it is his films that people knew him well for. Van Damme gave audiences plenty of incredible fight scenes but there were some terrible ones as well. Here’s an analysis of the impressive and unimpressive.

10 BEST: Lyon vs Attila (Lionheart)

In Lionheart, Van Damme starred as a street fighter and former convict named Lyon Gaultier. The actor had already worked with popular action stars such as Michel Qissi and Blo Yeung in previous films, so for this one, he was pitted against Michel’s bigger and older brother Abdel Qissi.

Lyon battled several opponents in the film but it is his fight against Attila that was the most impressive. With blood-thirsty wealthy people being part of the audience, Lyon sought to impress and he did. Apparently, the choreographer Frank Dux insisted on real punches during filming.

9 WORST: Fighting While Eating (Universal Soldier)

Having one or two Sci-fi films was mandatory for all the big action stars in the ’80s and ’90s. In this military sci-fi film, Van Damme plays the genetically modified Private Luc Deveraux / GR44. In one scene, he’s at a diner enjoying his meals — yes, he really needed like five plates worth of food — when a group of men decides to attack him.

One man becomes unconscious after his head gets slightly banged on the table. Ridiculous! More men come, one after the other and Luc manages to beat them all up. And he does this while eating from his own personal buffet.

8 BEST: Prison Fight (In Hell)

JeanClaude Van Damme The 5 Best & 5 Worst Fight Scenes Of His Career Ranked

Prison yards are always ripe grounds for fights and almost every popular action star has had one. But the best of them all goes to Van Damme. In the 2003 film, Van Damme’s character Kyle LeBlanc ends up in jail after murdering his wife’s killer outside a courtroom.

While in jail, he has to rely on his fighting skills to survive. But there is no better moment than when he faces off against the prison’s big bad dude in the final moments. LeBlanc is brutally beaten for most of the fight and it’s not until the very last minutes that he comes out on top.

7 WORST: Final Ring Fight (No Retreat, No Surrender)

JeanClaude Van Damme The 5 Best & 5 Worst Fight Scenes Of His Career Ranked

This film was obviously an attempt to imitate the Rocky franchise. Everything could have gone so smoothly had the protagonist Ivan Kraschinsky (Van Damme) not used excessive force during the final ring fight. Apparently, this was also a problem on set, as Van Damme had to be stopped from hurting other actors on several occasions.

In the specific scene, Ivan goes too hard on his inferior opponent. He even grabs a ring rope and strangles him with it. When the referee tries to intervene, Ivan kicks him away. To make it more hilarious, a fan even comes and tries to bite his leg.

6 BEST: Jack Quinn Vs The Henchmen (Double Team)

This was the second film in which Van Damme worked with the legendary director John Woo, after previously collaborating on Hard Target. The camera work in this specific fight scene was worthy of applause.

While Jack Quinn (Van Damme) is tracking down the villain Stavros (Mickey Rourke), accompanied by Yaz (Dennis Rodman), Van Damme finds himself surrounded by Stavros’ henchmen inside a hotel. An incredible fight scene ensues where chairs fly, shoes and thrown and the fisticuffs never slow down.

5 WORST: Bar Fight (Kickboxer)

JeanClaude Van Damme The 5 Best & 5 Worst Fight Scenes Of His Career Ranked

This fight is ridiculous on so many levels. It starts off with Van Damme’s drunk character Kurt impressing the ladies by showcasing his ‘dancing skills.’ He’d definitely get eliminated in the first round of Dancing With The Stars. Either way, the ladies are impressed and some even join him on the dancefloor.

The villainous Freddy Li (Ka Ting Lee) doesn’t like the attention Frank is getting so he sends some of his young fighters to attack him. Kurt dispatches them off with ridiculous moves such as a 180-degree kick, roundhouse kicks, and punches that don’t even land well. Take note, Kurt is drunk the whole time.

4 BEST: Frank Vs Chong Li (Bloodspot)

JeanClaude Van Damme The 5 Best & 5 Worst Fight Scenes Of His Career Ranked

Van Damme’s first-ever starring role saw him face off against one of the best action stars in the industry: Bolo Yeung. Not a bad way to start. Yeung had earned the nickname The Chinese Hercules’ thanks to his convincing villainous performances in movies such as Enter The Dragon.

Bloodspot’s final showdown saw Frank (Van Damme) and Chong Li (Yeung) breaking each other’s ribs with no mercy at all. The hits come in quick succession, with barely any room to breathe. Some of the punches are even missed by the naked eye but a few slow-motion moments give the viewer ample time to study the moves. Even though Chong Li lands most of the punches, it is Frank who eventually comes out on top.

3 WORST: Darren Micord Vs Mascot (Sudden Death)

JeanClaude Van Damme The 5 Best & 5 Worst Fight Scenes Of His Career Ranked

Sudden Death was like Die Hard in a stadium, and it could have been better had it not been for this ridiculous fight. Van Damme portrays Darren McCord, a former firefighter who now works as a fire and security consultant inside a stadium.

Darren soon finds himself having to protect both the Vice President and his kids after terrorists attack during a live match. One of the terrorists happens to be dressed as a team mascot. Darren fights the mascot but despite him showcasing a variety of undeniable skills, the whole fight comes off as cartoonish. Van Damme fighting a giant bird is as hilariously bad as it sounds.

2 BEST: Kurt Vs Tong (Kickboxer)

JeanClaude Van Damme The 5 Best & 5 Worst Fight Scenes Of His Career Ranked

It’s not only Van Damme’s best fight scene but also one of the best action scenes of all time. This brawl has every ingredient needed to make it a good fight: injustice, fear, suspense. Why is Kurt fighting Tong Po? To avenge his sibling who has gone through rough days thanks to the villain’s mercilessness.

It’s one of those fight scenes where the hero gets properly beaten at first. Kurt seems helpless as Tong unleashes all his fury on him. He gains some momentum as time passes and by the later stages of the fight, he is delivering consecutive blows and kicks, aided by the sounds of “Nuk Soo Kow”!

1 WORST: Master Durand Vs Briggs (Kick Boxer: Retaliation)

Mike Tyson’s acting career hasn’t gone particularly well but he can’t be faulted for trying. In this direct-to-video film, the legendary boxer played a felon named Briggs while an older Van Damme played Master Durand.

The two squared off briefly in a fight that should have been brilliant but ended up being underwhelming. Briggs missed all of his punches, which is a shame because what else do audiences want to see from Mike Tyson apart from him knocking someone out with his fists?
