In response to a fan question, Keanu Reeves said he wouldn’t want to see John Wick or The Matrix’s Neo appear on a Mortal Kombat roster. John Wick and Neo count as just a couple of the pop culture figures that Mortal Kombat faithful hope will one day pop up as guest fighters. Even MK Co-Creator Ed Boon has voiced similar desires in the past, once telling Brazilian outlet Meu PS4 that the Keanu Reeves characters would’ve worked well as MK11 DLC kombatants.

Since MK9, numerous pop culture icons have entered the arena alongside the likes of Scorpion and Sub-Zero. Freddy Krueger guest starred in MK9 as many may recall, as did God of War’s Kratos for the PlayStation version. Jason Voorhees crept his way onto the Mortal Kombat X roster as a DLC fighter in 2015; other horror mainstays such as Alien and Leatherface joined the fun, too. And Mortal Kombat 11 had the most robust post-launch content offerings, thanks to guest appearances by Rambo, The Terminator, The Joker, Spawn, and RoboCop.

Keanu Reeves answered a series of fan questions in an interview for Esquire, one of which pondered whether the actor would let John Wick or Neo guest star in Mortal Kombat if the decision were his to make. While Reeves recognizes that Mortal Kombat is “awesome in so many ways,” he doesn’t think the franchises should cross paths, simply saying the following: “If it was up to me, no. Neo, John Wick, they’re doing their own thing. Mortal Kombat’s doing [its] own thing.”

Keanu Reeves may have a point. Perhaps it’s best the three franchises remain separate, even if John Wick and Neo would make for incredible additions to the Mortal Kombat cast. Since such a choice isn’t his to make, though, there still exists a faint possibility that one or both of these characters will one day stand opposite the likes of Shao Kahn.

Of course, not all hopeful guest stars make the cut. It took years for Spawn to feature in a Mortal Kombat title, for example, and Ed Boon recently revealed that Buffy as a possible MK DLC character has come up several times over the years. But who can say what the future holds for the series long term? Given the list of pop culture icons that joined the MK11 roster, the possibilities don’t seem too limited.
