Last Night in Soho Writer Pitched A Portal Movie

Last Night in Soho screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns reveals she once pitched a Portal movie adaptation for Valve’s beloved video game. First launching in 2007, Valve’s puzzle-platform title puts players in the shoes of silent protagonist Chell as she is put through a series of challenges by the malevolent artificial intelligence GLaDos in the Aperture Science Enrichment Center, with the only promised reward being a piece of cake. Chell must utilize the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device to make her way through these test chambers while also attempting to discover the mystery behind her arrival in the rundown facility.

Portal has received rave reviews from critics and players alike for its unique gameplay, dark sense of humor and the performance from Ellen McLain as GLaDoS and is largely seen as one of the greatest video games ever made. Valve would get to work on a sequel, Portal 2, which would arrive in 2011 to even higher acclaim for its expansion of its gameplay, story, writing and the expansion of its voice cast with Stephen Merchant as the helpful A.I. Wheatley and J.K. Simmons as Aperture founder Cave Johnson, who is heard through a series of in-universe pre-recordings to guide the player through the puzzles. Though the popularity of the Portal games has led to a number of spin-off media and titles, a film has yet to materialize, despite one writer’s efforts early on.

While chatting with CinemaBlend for Edgar Wright’s psychological horror-thriller, Wilson-Cairns reflected on aspects of her career she felt haunted by, landing upon her failed Portal pitch. The Oscar nominee expressed her obsession with the game and recalled crafting “the best story ever” for her pitch, only for it to find no interest in producers. See what Wilson-Cairns said below:

“I’m haunted by the things I didn’t get to write. You know the video game Portal? I was pitching to do an adaptation of that and I love that video game, obsessed with it. It was quite early on in my career. And I came up with what I think is the best story ever, and I pitched it, and they were like ‘nah.’ And sometimes at night I play scenes from that in my dreams. That’s the only thing I’m haunted by is that I didn’t get to make the Portal movie.”

Though Wilson-Cairns remained mum on the exact details of her Portal movie pitch, it is interesting to think of what could have been had she been allotted the opportunity to pen the adaptation. Wilson-Cairns’ filmography may not be extensive, but it is already full of a strong body of work, namely for her Oscar-nominated work with Sam Mendes for the war drama 1917 as well as the critically acclaimed final season of Showtime’s Penny Dreadful. Her early successes have since netted her some high-profile work, including Wright’s Last Night in Soho and co-writing the script for Taika Waititi’s Star Wars film with the Thor: Ragnarok helmer.

Wilson-Cairns certainly isn’t the only creative to try their hand at bringing Valve’s Portal to life in the film format. Dan Trachtenberg garnered attention from producers with his short Portal: No Escape, which subsequently landed him the gig of the then-planned film adaptation of Y: The Last Man and partnering with J.J. Abrams’ 10 Cloverfield Lane, his acclaimed feature debut. While Trachtenberg may be busy with Predator prequel Skulls and Wilson-Cairns with Star Wars, Abrams is still hard at work on bringing Portal to life on screen with an unnamed writer drafting a script for Warner Bros.
