Though the Marvel Cinematic Universe is heading into a new phase not centered on Thanos and the Infinity Stones, the impact they’ve had still lingers. The Space Stone, aka the Tessaract, is of particular interest to one Redditor, as they’ve postulated a theory that this stone had enough sentience to use Loki to save itself from Thanos.

Reddit user u/TheMediocreCritic poses their theory, beginning with a narrow retelling of Loki’s escape from the aftermath of the Battle of New York. It’s narrow because this version’s “narrator” is in effect the Space Stone itself. The artifact has enough agency to understand that its best chance of escaping its destructive future is through someone else fated to be destroyed by Thanos: Loki.

By this theory, the Tesseract is an active player in its own preservation, slicing off from the main timeline and granting itself a new, thus unknown fate. While the variant of Loki’s future is hinted at, the Tesseract is gone by the time Loki awakens in what appears to be Mongolia. Wherever the Tesseract is, it’s presumably safe from Thanos. At least for now.

The theory relies on a handful of assumptions, many of which are argued by commentators in the theory thread. But surprisingly, there may be enough supporting evidence to make the theory work. TheMediocreCritic lists a few examples that suggest the Stone’s own willful behavior within the MCU, including burning free from the plane at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger to be found in the ice apart from Steve Rogers, and teleporting the Red Skull to Vormir to act as guardian to the Soul Stone. Dr. Selvig also implies the Tesseract “speaks” to him during The Avengers, which may suggest either intelligence or a symptom of the Stone-induced illness Selvig struggles with during The Dark World.

The issue with only using MCU content to prove the theory is that the full nature of the Stones is left relatively vague. However, further evidence can be found in comics lore. In the comics, the Soul Stone is possessed of a ravenous intelligence. And in both continuities, there’s a fair argument that the Mind Stone must be sentient enough in its own right to impact the consciousness of another being. It’s not only JARVIS that makes up Vision — it’s the Stone as well.

Meanwhile, as of 2019, the latest Infinity Wars event has settled the question that eventually arises throughout each reboot of comics canon. Infinity Wars: Infinity #1 by Gerry Dugan and Mark Bagley has Adam Warlock asserting enough power over a “new” set of Stones formed within the reborn multiverse to force the Soul Stone to grants its sentience to all of them. From there, the Stones will choose their own hosts and their own fates.

Other MCU lore also suggests consciousness can be found within various incarnations of the Stones. In the MCU, the Stones are pieces of the universe that existed before. However, The Thanos Quest by Jim Starlin and Ron Lim presents a different origin: Nemesis, the First Cosmos, a being so disenchanted with their existence that they ended it. The Stones are pieces of this entity, encapsulating some of the core concepts that make up all existence. And in 1995’s Avengers/Ultraforce, the segment by Warren Ellis, Larry Welch and George Pérez suggested the Stones had their own intelligence. The Stones have firm basis for agency.

Finally, at least one Reddit commentator argued motive with the u/TheMediocreCritic. After all, Thanos said he’d dissolved the Stones into atoms, not destroyed them. They still “exist” by this logic and have no need for self-preservation. However, Marvel confirmed their status as destroyed in a 2020 Instagram post meant to hype the arrival of Avengers: Infinity War on Disney+. Thus, there is reason for self-preservation, and perhaps even a way for the Stones to still impact the MCU’s future.

The idea of sentient Stones with goals of their own is a compelling theory. It gives them purpose beyond deus ex machina, and it furthers the strangeness of the overall Marvel Universe. While the theory has flaws and not quite enough evidence in the MCU itself, it makes for a better story. The comics help shore up the weak places, giving it likelier probability. And with the multiverse about to unfold, the intricacies of these small but potent Stones could be further explored.
