Nightmare On Elm Street The Actresses Who Almost Played Nancy

A Nightmare On Elm Street launched the career of Heather Langenkamp, but she wasn’t the only actress interested in playing Nancy Thompson, and some big names have been rumored to have auditioned for it. Wes Craven’s career in horror started with a bang in 1972 with The Last House on the Left, but his big break came in 1984 with A Nightmare on Elm Street, which introduced a very peculiar (and dangerous) slasher killer: Freddy Krueger.

A Nightmare On Elm Street follows four teenagers who are tormented by a serial killer with a very specific modus operandi: he terrorizes his victims in their dreams, and if he kills them in them, they die in real life as well. The only one to survive his attacks is Nancy Thompson, who went on to appear on A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge and A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, with Langenkamp returning in Wes Craven’s New Nightmare (and, to an extent, Nancy returned too).

Playing final girl Nancy Thompson changed Langenkamp’s life forever, but there were other actresses interested in the role, and some famous names have been rumored to be close to playing the role – and one of them ended up working with Wes Craven on a different project.

Nightmare On Elm Street: Courteney Cox Was Rumored To Have Auditioned To Play Nancy

Heather Langenkamp reportedly beat over two hundred actresses for the role of Nancy Thompson, and over the years some well-known actresses have been rumored to be among those who didn’t get the role. Courteney Cox was one of them, who at the time was just getting started in the entertainment business, and in the same year A Nightmare on Elm Street came out, she became widely known for starring in Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark” music video. Cox’s big break came in 1994 when she starred as Monica Geller in Friends, and in 1996 she played Gale Weathers in Craven’s Scream.

Another big name rumored to have auditioned to play Nancy was Demi Moore, who had already appeared in the films Choices and Parasite, and became widely known when she played Jules in Joel Schumacher’s St. Elmo’s Fire. However, casting director Annette Benson has ruled out Cox and Moore, but she’s unsure about two other names: Tracey Gold and Jennifer Grey. Gold is best remembered for playing Carol Seaver in Growing Pains, while Grey is known for playing Jeanie Bueller in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and “Baby” in Dirty Dancing. One name neither confirmed nor denied by Benson is Claudia Wells, who played Jennifer Parker in Back to the Future.

Heather Langenkamp was a newcomer when A Nightmare On Elm Street was looking for its lead. She appeared in Nickel Mountain in 1983 but wasn’t a widely known name, and Benson was already familiar with her as she auditioned for Night of the Comet and The Last Starfighter (losing on both occasions to Catherine Mary Stewart). Though Langenkamp is still active in the film industry as an actress, she has also worked as prosthetic makeup coordinator and is the co-owner of the makeup FX firm AFX Studio, and has worked as special FX coordinator for films like Dawn of the Dead and The Cabin in the Woods. Langenkamp has made a name for herself in the industry, and she will always have a special place in the hearts of horror fans for playing Nancy.
