Nintendo has acquired the Canadian video game studio Next Level Games, the developer behind Luigi’s Mansion 3. The studio also developed that title’s predecessor, Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, for the Nintendo 3DS. Aside from the Luigi’s Mansion franchise, Next Level Games has also worked with Nintendo on both Super Mario Strikers and its sequel Mario Strikers Charged – there’s even a Mario Strikers Easter egg hiding in Luigi’s Mansion 3 in the form of a painting just before the player enters Paranormal Productions. Finally, the Canadian firm has also spearheaded Punch-Out!! on the Wii and Metroid Prime: Federation Force on the 3DS for Nintendo.

Fans have been clamoring for a new Mario Strikers title, as the most recent entry was Mario Strikers Charged on the Wii back in 2007. Despite the fact that Mario has participated in plenty of sports games, such as tennis, golf, and even the Olympics alongside Sonic the Hedgehog, it’s been over a decade since a new Mario Strikers game. While that spin-off series is still in limbo, fans have been pining for a new Mario sports title as the last game to offer such a premise was 2018’s Mario Tennis Aces.

As reported by Gearoid Reidy from Bloomberg, Nintendo has purchased Next Level Games and the deal will officially close on March 1st. In the English statement, Next Level Games’ owners and employees thought that it would be timely to sell their shares. They began deliberating whom to sell to and eventually landed on Nintendo. It is also mentioned in the official statement that, as a result of this acquisition, Next Level Games’ development resources will become available for Nintendo and that development speed and quality are expected to increase now that Nintendo and Next Level Games will be working much more closely. Take a look at Reidy’s tweet and the official statement below.

For fans of both the Luigi’s Mansion and Mario Strikers franchises, this is an exciting prospect. This likely indicates that Nintendo players will receive more titles from Next Level Games, as development speed and quality is expected to increase. As mentioned earlier, it’s been a long time since a new entry in the Mario Strikers series, so maybe that will be Next Level Games’ first assignment after the acquisition is completed. Hopefully, there will be more Luigi’s Mansion titles, as well. It took quite some time for fans to get a sequel to the beloved 2001 GameCube launch title.

One potential downside of this acquisition is that Next Level Games will have less autonomy. This means that Nintendo could possibly stain Next Level Games’ legacy of excellent titles (outside of the fan-loathed Metroid Prime: Federation Force, that is). Hopefully, faster development times don’t signify an unhealthy crunch for the developer. However, Nintendo has never really been a company to engage in that toxic practice. Here’s to hoping another wonderful game, like Luigi’s Mansion 3, is on the way.
