No Way Home Hides a Sneaky Nod to Tobey Maguire’s First SpiderMan Film

Spider-Man: No Way Home was a celebration of almost 20 years of the hero’s adventures on the big screen and chock-full of Easter Eggs and references to the Sam Raimi and Marc Webb films. But while there were many callbacks to iconic moments in the previous films, such as Willem Dafoe’s memeable line, “I’m something of a scientist myself,” and Tobey Maguire’s back, there were some more subtle references to previous films as well. One moment, in particular, is so subtle that it is incredibly easy to miss, and it takes place during the film’s climax at the Statue of Liberty.

Twitter user @_Earth_199999 spotted what may be a subtle nod to the first Sam Raimi Spider-Man film. The user notes that when the Green Goblin throws the Pumpkin Bombs at Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, he dodges them in a manner that is almost exactly like how Maguire’s iteration of the character did in the first film when he took on the Goblin.

In the first Spider-Man film, Tobey’s Peter faces off against Dafoe’s Green Goblin in a burning building. When the Goblin throws his spinning knife bombs at him, the scene slows to a now-iconic view of Spider-Man doing a slow-motion spin to dodge the villain’s weapons. The scene is very well-lit, and one can very clearly see Peter dodging the bombs as gracefully as a spider can. He then engages the Goblin in combat before the bombs came back and slightly injures him.

Meanwhile, in No Way Home, towards the end when Doctor Strange finally returns from being dangled in the Mirror Dimension, his conversation with Peter Parker (all three of them) was cut short when the Goblin makes his return, launching a barrage of his trademark Pumpkin knife bombs toward the heroes. Just before they exploded, however, Tom Holland’s Peter dodged the bombs and protected Doctor Strange and Doc Ock using a similar maneuver to Tobey’s. But unlike that film, the scene in No Way Home took place at night, and the shot of Tom dodging the bombs was not very well lit or noticeable.

While the film had many obvious callbacks to its previous installments, there were also many more subtle moments such as this one that only the most eagle-eyed of fans will notice. For Marvel and Spider-Man fans, in particular, No Way Home is the gift that keeps on giving in terms of Easter Eggs and references. And just like with Guardians of the Galaxy and James Gunn’s mysterious hidden Easter egg, fans could possibly be discovering subtle references like this one for years to come.

To see Tom Holland’s Spidey do his best Tobey Maguire impression, Spider-Man: No Way Home is now available on digital.
