One Tree Hill 10 Most Unlikely Friendships (That Actually Happened)

As one of the most successful teen dramas of all time, One Tree Hill is a show filled with plenty of friendships. In some cases, characters are only friends during their high school years, by virtue of being in school with each other for four years. In other cases, characters don’t really make a full connection until their adult years.

Whether in the series’ high school era or in its twice-revamped adult years, One Tree Hill never had a shortage of friendships at its forefront. Some friendships were definitely more surprising than others, however – and in many cases, these unexpected friendships were some of the series’ best.

10 Alex and Quinn

Opposites don’t only attract in the world of romance. Sometimes, two opposite personalities can perfectly balance each other in the friendship world, too. Party girl Alex Dupre and guarded photographer Quinn James could not have less in common with one another, yet somehow, these two become thick as thieves.

Although One Tree Hill usually tackled more serious topics and adult issues during its later seasons, Alex and Quinn often provided the show with necessary light-hearted and funny scenes, even if some of them are unrealistic.

9 Peyton and Nathan

It’s not always possible to remain friends with an ex-boyfriend or ex-girlfriend. But somehow, Nathan Scott and Peyton Sawyer are able to make this work. It might be due to the fact that Nathan and Peyton’s romantic relationship was never that strong in the first place.

But their friendship – one of the series’ less frequently utilized – produces some incredibly poignant moments for both characters, particularly when they are struggling the most during seasons 2 and 5.

8 Brooke and Rachel

In some cases, friendship can be forged with someone who initially seems like an enemy or a threat. In seasons 3 and 4, Brooke finds her status at Tree Hill High’s resident popular mean girl challenged by the arrival of Rachel Gatina. Rachel sets her sights on Brooke’s on-again, off-again boyfriend, Lucas, and the two are frequently at war with each other.

But in season 4, Rachel and Brooke are able to find some common ground and build a unique friendship based on their shared popularity and tough personalities. Sadly, their friendship falls apart in subsequent seasons as Rachel takes advantage of Brooke’s generosity.

7 Skills and Peyton

At the beginning of the series, Skills is a member of the River Court crew, a group of boys who play basketball on Tree Hill’s River Court. He is close friends with Lucas Scott and Mouth McFadden in particular. But in later seasons, as Lucas begins a relationship with Peyton Sawyer, Skills quickly latches onto Peyton as a friend as well.

Even when Lucas and Peyton are no longer together, Skills is always on Peyton’s side, even if it means opposing Lucas’s current romantic relationships. In particular, he is one of her strongest and most unexpected sources of support in seasons 5 and 6.

6 Chris and Haley

Sometimes, the most exciting friendships are ones that occur when you least expect them to. Chris Keller was previously responsible for the near dissolution of Haley James’s marriage to Nathan Scott when he invited her to come on tour with him in season 2.

But when Chris returns to Tree Hill in season 9, he and Haley find themselves becoming friends as he offers her help with the Red Bedroom Records label. Although Chris isn’t exactly gifted when it comes to helping Haley out at Karen’s Cafe, the two do once again make beautiful music together and find a way to be friends as a result.

5 Whitey and Jake

Friendships can be intergenerational, especially when there is a mentorship component involved. One of the series’ briefest, but most moving, storylines takes place in seasons 1 and 2. Tree Hill High basketball coach Whitey Durham has a clear soft spot for Jake Jagielski, who is a teen father with an infant daughter, Jenny.

When Jake finds himself embroiled in a custody battle with his abusive ex-girlfriend, Whitey is the first person to offer Jake all the advice and comfort he needs. Whitey even goes above and beyond, risking his own freedom to ensure Jenny’s safety as he sneaks her out of state to live with Jake’s relatives.

4 Quentin and Jamie

Another intergenerational friendship is forged in season 5. With the introduction of Nathan and Haley’s son, Jamie, One Tree Hill begins to feature adorable adult and child encounters. But the series has its most success with Jamie’s character when it produces a friendship between Jamie and Quentin, the troubled star player on the Tree Hill basketball team.

As coaches, Lucas and Skills both have a hard time getting through to Quentin. But Quentin – or Q, as Jamie calls him – absolutely comes alive and opens himself up with Jamie, to whom he becomes a hero. When Q is tragically killed when he stops at a gas station during a robbery, Jamie is fundamentally changed as a result, leading to one of the series’ most heartbreaking moments.

3 Mouth and Brooke

Mouth McFadden might have been in love with Brooke Davis in his younger years, but once the two become friends, it’s clear that they were always meant to be platonic pals. Although they come from very different social circles, with Mouth being a nerd and Brooke the school’s most popular girl, these two make a great pair.

Mouth often provides Brooke with the support and reason she needs in her life, helping her in particular with her run for student body president. Likewise, Brooke gives Mouth access to the social scene he had always been deliberately excluded from, as many other students looked down on him.

2 Peyton and Haley

When Peyton and Haley first meet, they are opposites on every level. Haley is a nerd and Lucas Scott’s best friend, while Peyton is a reluctant cheerleader and Nathan Scott’s girlfriend. Soon enough, however, these two switch sides, with Peyton falling for Lucas, and Haley falling for Nathan.

As their romantic relationships change, Peyton and Haley also forge a friendship. Their shared love of music also brings them together, and in season 5, the two go on to launch Red Bedroom Records and eventually become sisters-in-law.

1 Karen and Deb

It would have been incredibly easy for One Tree Hill to write a world in which Deb Scott and Karen Roe always hated each other. In their younger years, Dan Scott, the father of both Lucas and Nathan, left a pregnant Karen for Deb. Therefore, it would be easy for Karen to resent Deb for having the life that could have been hers, or for Deb to not trust Karen given her past with Dan.

But One Tree Hill subverts these dated tropes of jealousy, allowing Deb and Karen to connect as friends, as mothers, and as business partners. Although they face their fair share of challenges, due to Deb’s addiction and Dan’s interference, these two women are always at their best when they are friends.
