Onward: 10 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Or Missed In Pixar’s Movie
Pixar’s Onward is a delightful fantasy film packed with references and background information that can easily be missed.

Produced by Disney and Pixar, Onward was released to theaters as one of the last releases prior to theaters closing. The story is set in a modern fantasy world full of magic that has faded away as brothers Ian and Barley Lightfoot race against time to bring back their dad for a day.
Featuring the voices of Tom Holland (Spider-Man) and Chris Pratt (Star-lord) among others, Onward capitalized on the popularity of the fantasy genre, even paying homage to many other films. This movie was full of references, easter eggs, and deeper meanings that can be easily missed throughout.
10 Pixar Easter Eggs
One of these is the TripleDent Gum in the gas station from Inside Out which is a nod to Pixar’s history when they created a Trident commercial. Speaking of history, the license plate on the key Ian carries says “PA2-86S,” referring to how Pixar was formed in February 1986. Also, when entering the Manticore’s Tavern, the Pixar ball is seen on a shield.
As for Toy Story, there is an elf resembling Bonnie, Pizza Realm referencing Pizza Planet, and Poultry Palace from a short. There are also many nods to Brave, including the shield in the cave, sword in the pawnshop, and Kingdom of Dunbroch symbol along with an area called Brave Wilderness both found in the Manticore’s Tavern. Other Pixar works referenced are Bao, Coco, The Good Dinosaur, Ratatouille, Monsters University, Up, and Wreck-It Ralph.
9 Disney References
As for Disney’s non-Pixar movies, early on in Onward, fans see creatures resembling rock trolls from Frozen and the Lightfoots have Aurora soap referencing Sleeping Beauty. On their travels, they see Manticore’s Tavern staff wearing Sorcerer Mickey hats from Fantasia as well as a restaurant called Sword in the Scone referencing Sword in the Stone.
A few other things of note are the Hades patch on Barley’s jacket referencing the villain from Hercules, the school mascot’s similar look to Figment and how Wilden’s shoes resemble that of Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland who has the ability to hide parts of its body similar to the father.
8 Dungeons & Dragons And Magic: The Gathering
Throughout the film, Barley plays a game called the Quests of Yore to help guide Ian in his use of magic. The two things that stand out with this are Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering. The cards of the Quests of Yore game closely resemble that of Magic: The Gathering.
As for Dungeons & Dragons, the book Barley uses resembles those of DnD, he has two patches on his jacket of the DnD dice, and Onward’s gelatinous cube is reminiscent of the oozing cube from the tabletop game. Lastly, the Quests of Yore game Barley plays has been developed and will be available to play in the Fall.
7 Indiana Jones Parallels
Speaking of the gelatinous cube scene, there are many parallels between Indiana Jones and Onward towards the end. Just as Ian has to magically cross a bridge by believing in it, so too does Indiana Jones in The Last Crusade.
Similarly, Jones has to navigate through a booby-trapped puzzle room just like the Lightfoot brothers when trying to escape the cube. Lastly, Jones famously grabs his hat just before a door closes in The Temple of Doom just as Ian and Barley pull their father to safety before the door closes.
6 Mythological Inspirations
It goes without saying that there are plenty of mythological characters, but there are many that can be easily missed. For instance, there is a troll manning a toll booth where you can pay with cash or riddle and the company is Under Bridge Transportation Authority.
Guinevere, Barley’s car, references the wife of King Arthur and gallops toward the rocks to the tune of “Rise to Valhalla,” the place where warriors go after death according to Norse mythology. There are also magic beans for sale outside of a store and Hydra on Barley’s jacket referring to the beast though this can also be for the Marvel organization.
5 Nods To Marvel
There are also many similarities between Holland and Pratt’s roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ian wears red and blue and has many awkward mannerisms like Spider-Man. Barley shares Starlord’s love of mixtapes and his traumatic experience where he does not say goodbye to a parent.
Additionally, there are many references to the recent Avengers films in the form of the Infinity Gauntlet. It appears on Barley’s jacket, a sticker on the car, in a claw machine game, and the phoenix gem can even be compared to the soul stone in how it reunites people with their deceased loved ones.
4 Traditions In Every Pixar Movie
There are certain things that Pixar makes a point to do in every film. For example, John Ratzenberger is a voice actor who has appeared in every single Pixar film and voices a construction worker in Onward.
Additionally, Officer Bronco is told they have a 113 referring to A113, the classroom in the California Institute of the Arts where many prominent Pixar animators studied. Lastly, Pixar always puts in an easter egg for their next film, which is in this case Soul. In the Lightfoot house, there are several records, one of which says Dorothea Williams, a character in Soul.
3 Lord Of The Rings References
As a major franchise in the genre, Onward pays its respects to The Lord of The Rings. The wizard, in the beginning, is reminiscent of Gandalf, especially in how the former uses fireworks just as the latter does in The Fellowship of the Ring. Additionally, Barley has a ‘You Shall Not Pass’ sign in his car and Ian later produces fire just as Gandalf did.
They also have a mixtape with LOR on it and a drink called Mountain Doom referencing Mount Doom where Frodo destroyed the ring. The last major nod to the franchise is in Burger Shire store, which says “now serving second breakfast” both of which reference the Hobbits of the Shire.
2 Making Of The Film
Aside from easter eggs, there were also a lot of insider secrets in the film that adds to the whole experience. For starters, Pixar created a team that included people who were very into fantasy franchises to help with the story.
In addition, virtual reality was also employed to help the team better connect with the characters. The film was also almost set in the real world with much more of a science focus where the father would have been working on a way to communicate with the dead.
1 Meaning Behind It
The director of the film, Dan Scanlon, actually modeled the film off his own personal experiences. Having also lost his father at a young age, his curiosity about what he was like proved a starting point for the film’s development.
There is also a picture of Ian and Barley that very closely resembles one of Dan and his brother. As a result of his experiences, the title Onward was chosen because the word really captures moving on after experiencing loss overall, in this case, that of a loved one.
